Let's not comfort ourselves with food: ~INDYGIRL

~INDYGIRL has a very moving and courageous blog today, reminding us not to try to comfort ourselves with food:


No matter what the problem is, eating too much won't help. It doesn't work.

She is so right.

Reading her blog made me think about all the other ways we try to comfort ourselves.

Too much food.

Too much alcohol.

Too much smoking.

Too many drugs.

Too much gambling.

Too much shopping.

Too many friends (with benefits).

Too much TV.

Too much screen time . . . .

Of course, probably nobody thinks that the above are "good things"

But then there are those comforting distractions that ARE socially acceptable, the ones people tend to praise us for: even though they're still excessive:

Too much work.

Too much helicopter parenting of our kids.

Too much public spirited do-gooderism (to the neglect of our other responsibilities including ourselves).

Even too much exercise.

All good in moderation. None of them good when carried to extremes. And none of them a very successful distraction from the inevitable difficulties of human existence anyhow. (Although lots of good things may actually get accomplished as a result of the second batch).

I get it. I do . But: it's hard to live through the tough times. And there are very few of us (certainly not me) who get through those tough times without various kinds of excessive behaviours. Addictions, really.

Gotta confine myself, at least, to those addictions that don't pack on the pounds, right?

I read waaaaaaay too much. Yes I do. Although I try to keep the cost down by using the public library.

But that's only one of the ways I distract myself!!

I suspect that just like learning to tolerate hunger as the price of staying lean, I need to learn to tolerate other kinds of discomfort as the price of being human.

Hunger is not an emergency. And I'm pretty sure: neither are the other varieties of discomfort.

    Great blog. "Discomfort as the price of being human" - You hit the nail on the head there! And we're all in that boat together - here's to us figuring out non-food ways to soothe that discomfort!

    Thankfully ddictions and "bad"habits can be cast aside. It takes a lot of work and focus. But I found it comes down to what do you want most.

    Thanks for pointing out an excellent blog. Your post was excellent. There are many types of addictions..and the addictive personality will seek new ones when one is replaced. Discomfort is definitely a sign of addiction and the seeking to avoid that discomfort is part of the process. Moderation is valuable.
    I may have an addictive side in terms of cooking, reading, and exercise.

    You make an excellent points here. So many distractions, so little time. No wonder we don't stay on task.

    When you think about it, the trouble we get ourselves into starts with being obsessed with something.to the point where we can no longer control ourselves when around it. In all areas of our lives, improvement begins when we can keep it in moderation. Just being successful in one area doesn't always translate it into being good in another. But it gives a good foundation in being able to help ourselves along in other weaknesses.
    Thank you for an inspired well written reminder that its in all things we must strive for moderation. I have had more than one obsession than just food and its made me shut out all other things that I probably would have enjoyed had I not been too busy to see them :(
    Here is to a well rounded lifestyle!

    Amen, Sister! Preach it, woman! Love this blog, and its point to IndyGirl's, too.

    Those reminders sometimes have to be posted to self on a daily basis: You can't fix the world by over-working at your job. The cookie at the coffee kiosk won't make your problems go away. As you say, all things in moderation!
