My First Half Marathon

Monday, November 18, 2013

I say my first, but I really ended up having more fun that I thought I would yesterday.

I started training in August for this as a tool to help keep up the steam on my weight loss. I’ll admit, the training was tiring, and I’m so happy to have my Saturday mornings back again!
Yesterday was great though. So many people, and so many people encouraging people. I think that ended up being my favorite part. I have no idea there would be so many cheerleaders along the course, it was pretty awesome. The signs were a great distraction, and the water hoses from wonderfully kind strangers were FANTASTIC. Some of the signs:
“way to go perfect stranger, we’re proud of you”
“you’re running better than congress!”
“Hurry up Honey, my feet hurt from standing here!”
“run like a zombie is chasing you”
I can’t remember all the signs, but they were great! And as I mentioned, in some of the neighborhoods we went thru, homeowners were out spraying their water hoses for us. At first I didn’t take advantage, but about half way thru, I LOVED them! LOL They were wonderful!
Something I did discover about myself during this… I AM a bit competitive. LOL I would see someone in front of me, and make it my goal to pass them. That’s what got me thru the race, just getting ahead of the next person.
I did have to stop for one bathroom break, it was a little frustrating to just stand in line and see everyone I had just passed go pass. I did use the time to stretch though, so that’s good. I finished my walk with a time of 3:40, not bad when you consider I had that stop.
When I was done, I got my medal right away & a bottle of water. Then as I proceeded thru, I got a few more goodies; Gatorade, chocolate milk, a smoothie, banana, corn chips & 2 bagels… oh and a towel drenched in ice cold water for my neck/head. My hands were FULL by the time I met my hubby!

In the end, it was a GREAT time, and I’m hoping I can run some if not all of the next one!

A half?!??! WOW ... that is totally great! Just the thought staggers my mind.

And ... you seem super excited as I read this ...yahhh. I totally love the feel of events ... they are always so positive and makes you want to do more of them.

(By the way, the signs you mentioned were HILARIOUS and fun.)

Now ... I recommend you go to a running shop and get one of those 13.1 stickers!

    Sarah,

I am so proud of you. My hubby and I chickened out because we were not able to train like we wanted to. So we have decided to do a few more 5ks before we hit the big time with a half marathon, but we have decided that one of our goals will be to do a whole marathon one of these years.

    Congrats on your accomplishment.
