Thank a vet

Monday, May 26, 2014

Another Memorial Day.

I used to call Dad and tease him that today meant I should remember to call him; my favorite veteran. Today I'll simply remember him.

My family was full of military service people. Most of my uncles, one of my aunts served in WWII. My moms sister and her husband met in Hawaii on the Navy base, my uncle served on the USS Missouri. She was in naval intelligence and outranked him!
My dad's brother in Korea. My cousin, Viet Nam.
In high school some of my friend lined up at the recruiters office, some bolted for Canada. Viet Nam drew a lot of lines in the sand.
My friends kids, our kids' friends, have been in places half way around the world. Some haven't come back. Some are changed

Today I say something I never thought to say when I was younger.
"Thank you for your service."

May you find someone to honor today too!

I honor my ex-husband, damaged and changed by Viet Nam all while I was an innocent in high school, and my son, who came to understand his dad through his own service in more recent conflicts.

Sometimes, in the shelter of the middle of this great nation is would seem easy to "take it for granted"... but this shelter does not come without a price. Today I honor the vets and the families who love them.

Thank you to all those, the 1% who choose to step up and wear the uniform with honor.

I wish my dad were still here to thank him for his service in WWII. We should always remember. Rest in peace, Dad. emoticon

emoticon I honor my Father, (who has gone on before me) and my brothers who all served in the U. S Army. I am proud to have served myself in the U. S Air Force. I honor a fallen friend, Marilyn and those who have served, those who are serving and those future soldeirs. God bless the U.S.A.! emoticon emoticon emoticon
