5th Week

Tuesday, September 09, 2014

I can't believe I'm already on the 5th week of this challenge! Next week will be the half way point. emoticon

My weight loss hasn't really gone the way I've wanted it to, but I made a small break thru this week. Now I just need to keep it up.

My running is going pretty well. I had a hard hilly run on Saturday, and when I ran last night, I don't think I had fully recovered. But, I have today off and then only 2 miles of speed work on Wednesday.

Tonight starts a new women's bible study at church, I'm looking forward to it, but I just hope I don't forget. haha If it's not something I usually do, I tend to forget about it.

Did you know... next Monday is 100 days till Christmas!!!! emoticon emoticon

I want to do BOTH ... but not sure if there is a correct strategy to get one going before the other or not.

But I also know that getting more distance is a bit hard for me ... once I hit mile 3 ... my leg and hip start to go numb. (I have spinal stenosis ... and it seems at that particular distance has been when I start irritating the nerve. It has pretty much been consistently at the 3 mile stage. Funny though ... if I break it up with another activity, then I can do another 3 miles. )

well, I suppose it depends on your goals. Do you want to run further or faster? I'm running 3x a week and working on distance mostly, but also speed. Once a week I add distance and once a week I either do speed or hill work. The other day, is an "easy" day... 4 miles is NOT easy to me! haha

Ahhh ok. I've done HIIT ... but at the gym....and it was not so much for speed work....but I can see in a running setting it can be. I've heard of the fartlek term too ... but never quite delved into it too much. hmmm ... I am slow with running ... but should I work on distance before speed?

Oh ... hey, you just sent me a note on my spark page too!

Speed work is basically High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). So, you can "fartlek"... seriously... that's a thing, or general speed work.

Farlek helps build lung capacity, during your run you add a burst of speed every few minutes.

Speed work is generally on a track (flat surface) and you basically alternate slow and fast laps around the track.

What do you do for speed work? (I am soooo still trying to catch up with strategies and theories on all things running. Give me a bike I can have some reasonable input. Toss me running shoes and I'm like, "huh?")

But being Wednesday, I have more time in the afternoon to run ... so I am debating either doing a longer run (which for me is about 3 miles) ... or trying hills again.

And you're not going to be midway on this challenge.... you'll be half completed! Woooot wooot!!!
