Holiday Recipe Makeover: Egg Nog Latte

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

I LOVE this day of the year. The day that Starbucks releases it's Egg Nog Latte. It is SO good. But also SO bad for you.

Did you know that Eggnog lattes that have more calories, fat and sugar than a food court cinnamon roll!!

Here's the "skinny" from www.blisstree.com:

"Other seasonal latte flavors like peppermint mocha and gingerbread are named after candy and dessert; you should walk into one of those knowing that you’ll incur some damage. But eggnog? It’s just another kind of milk! Right? Not really. A A 16-ounce Starbucks eggnog latte without whipped cream is so full of fat and sugar that you might as well be eating a Minibon from your mall’s food court: It has more calories, sugar and fat than a cream cheese frosting-drizzled, buttery round of dough. "

Check out the nutrition facts:

■Minibon Roll: 350 calories, 14g fat, 7g saturated fat, 51g carbohydrates, 24g sugar
■Eggnog Latte: 460 calories, 21g fat, 12g saturated fat, 53g carbohydrates, 48g sugar

Shocking, I know.

Here are some tips from Blisstree to lower the fat:

■Size it down. Sixteen ounces sounds nice in theory, but really: who wants all that milk?
■Skip the whip. Always. We know you really like it. But those nutrition facts above are already assuming that you’ve foregone the sugary whipped cream topping.
■Remember the Minibon. If you’d rather have an eggnog latte than a cinnamon roll, half pint of Ben & Jerry’s, or other dessert, that’s fine. But just remember that nutritionally, it’s no better for your body. It’s still a load of sugar and fat that you should consider a special treat instead of a daily reward. If holiday shopping or end-of-year deadlines are stressing you out, come up with a way to de-stress and reward yourself that doesn’t involve close to 500 calories, 21 grams of fat, and 48 grams of sugar.

However...my plan is to revamp it. I found a recipe online that I plan to execute this week.

This is so easy to make. If you have an espresso machine, make espresso with good strong coffee and steam your eggnog with a little milk to make it frothy and hot. Top with a dash of nutmeg and even some fat free whipped topping if you wish. If you don't have an espresso machine, no worries. Make your coffee a little stronger and heat your eggnog over the stove or in the microwave, then whip it in the blender.

Directions:

Brew coffee or espresso.

Heat eggnog and combine with milk. Use frothing wand slowly up and down, side to side until eggnog and milk is thick and foamed. (Or put in blender if you don't have a frothing wand).

That's a great idea. I love the egg nog latte too. Don't they have a skinny version, without the whipped cream?? This time of year you can find eggnog flavored coffee too!! Yum!
