Restaurant Sodium -- Gaaaaah!

Sunday, November 30, 2014

Up two pounds today.

Even though I managed to keep well within calorie range yesterday -- and had a great workout too.

We were in Toronto for a concert. Turned out that the restaurant where we were meeting people did not take reservations, and there was a lineup out the door -- and so the meal I'd "planned" using on-line menu wasn't available.

Went to substitute spot, only place within blocks with free seats, ordered carefully, gave more than half the entrée to DH (jerk chicken with rice and salad). But: salty salty salty (and hot hot hot spicy too which probably masked how salty).

Oh well oh well oh well. Lots of water today, keeping on keeping on.

Concert was . . . interesting. Gordon Lightfoot at Massey Hall. Music I listened to mostly over 40 years ago: and I'd guess most of those there too. How can he be 75? It was absolutely a different era. But Massey Hall hasn't changed at all!

Sodium eating out is the bane of my existence! Hubby would eat out lots and lots of meals if I encouraged him, but just can't. Last night he drove through fast food for him and grandkids, but I waited to eat until after we got home due to sodium.

You are doing just right drinking that water. Within a couple days those extra pounds will be gone.

love gordon lightfoot! and salty restaurant food - since we don't add salt at home, we really notice how some restaurants just pile on the salt. ah well, in a few days those salt-related pounds will be gone…

Yep, lots of water to flush out that sodium. Been a long time since I've attended a live music concert. Two of my favorites from the day, that I saw several times each, were The Eagles and Three Dog Night.

Wow Gordon Lightfoot! Sounded like you were not all that impressed. Shame. One of my all time favorite songs is the Wreck of The Edmond Fitzgerald. Always moves me when I hear it which is rarely. No 'oldies' stations here, just too much country and modern rock. Not familiar with Massey hall..
Yep, the sodium in restaurant meals will get you every time. No worries, you will get it back in no time!

Gordon Lightfoot ("If you could read my mind, love, what a tale my thoughts could tell") - I am envious. Yet, I know his voice has changed. My favorite Canadian celebrity, with Alex Trebek a very close second.

Yes, up 2 pounds with you...and it must be the salt. emoticon to wash it all away!

OH MY GOSH! Went to see Gordon Lightfoot when I was 20 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I bet it was an amazing concert!

I too notice the sodium, not only in restaurant food but in anything I buy canned or processed (which isn't much). My husband has high blood pressure so I NEVER cook anything with salt; he never uses it and I just add what I want.

    Hope the concert was AMAZING!!!

OMG, did you trigger memories. Had tickets for a Gordon Lightfoot concert in Minneapolis, MN (I was in college in MN @ the time). The money ended up being refunded, because he was too stoned to perform. **SIGH** Hope @ 75 he was better prepared! LOL But I loved his music as well.

I know EXACTLY what you are saying about the sodium. We went to town again yesterday and I had my "stand by sandwich" which made the second time this week and I was up a .4 lb....and I know it's the sodium from the sauerkraut. My calories are never over even with the sandwich substitute.

Sounds like you had a good time though. Oi you made me do a double-think about music 40 years ago. It WAS wasn't it? REALITY check there.

I know you will be right back down that two pounds tomorrow morning!

So glad you enjoyed that concert. You handled the food situation the best you could. Soon that salt will be a faded memory as you know how to care for yourself.

Gordon Lightfoot!!!!!!!!! I'd have gone to that concert too! (Heard him in Seattle yes 40-ish years ago!)

What amazes me is that even though the singers have aged, and may look totally differently than the way we remember, the voices are the same! (I went to a Crosby Stills Nash concert in Italy and yes, they sound the same. Even my mother, mind ravaged by Alzheimer's, could still sing in the same beautiful voice as ever.)

And yes, lots of water, maybe with some lemon - I think the lemon helps with the salt, I vaguely remember that. Or vitamin B6 which acts as a natural diuretic, if you have any.

I hope you got up and danced!!!!!!!

Jerk can be very salty. I get sodium up pounds from Chinese food. They will go down soon. It is interesting to watch musicians of our youth age along with us.

Ahhhhhhhh those other people are getting old.... gotta get rid of my mirrors soon!!! Hoping you enjoyed the concert!!!

As for the sodium...Oh Well, water will wash away and once in awhile is really not a problem. You did such a good job pre-planning, but even the best laid plans sometimes go astray....

My 87 year old mother's favorite thing to do is go out to eat. I don't like it but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do! Regularly! emoticon

Chinese food does that to me. I once gained 3 pounds overnight! Taught me a lesson about water retention.

I know what you mean about the musicians of our youth... and being startled by their ages. I mean, weren't the Beatles just a few scant years older than I? How could Paul McCartney be over 70? How? Oh, yeah... I'm 62... I don't FEEL 62!

Yep, none of us immune. As for the water retention... you know it will go away soon, because you have solid maintenance skills! emoticon

We had Chinese food last night for supper so I'm staying off scale today, lots of sodium!

It's pretty hard when you can't get in the restaurant you plan on but you do the best you can in another.

I know what you mean about that sodium. We are doing an over night trip with friends and really had no idea where the day would take us especially for dinner. I had Walleye for dinner and some cheese samples during the day (probably more samples than I should have) and this morning, although there is not a scale available here at the hotel, I can feel the blot from all of the salt and water retention.

    WATER! WATER! WATER! Today.

Oof, restaurant sodium is tough. Glad you got to see Gordon Lightfoot--he was a favorite of mine--I didn't know he was still doing concerts!
