To resolute or not. Pt. 1?
New Years Resolution for me, theyre like a curse. I dont even make them anymore.
I looked up the definition of Resolution, here are two of the entries:
*the act of resolving or determining upon an action, course of action, method, procedure, etc
*a resolve; a decision or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.
I can make some pretty decent; daily, weekly & monthly goals, but YEARLY? That’s long term bro! In all honestly, I didn’t grow up making goals, its just not something that was focused on. My dad had goals, being a military man he had delightful weight, exercise and promotion goals, but those were all for work. It wasn’t passed down to me. Errgo New Years goals or Resolutions have rarely worked for me. I make goals, but never PLANS. And THAT boys and girls is the problem for me, anyhow. Not sure what YOURE problem is.
So, last night when I was WIDE awake at midnight, I started making a list. Well, a few lists haha Im a list person. My first list was things I need to do around the house because in 2015 I want to keep house better. Hows that for a vague goal. Shall we make this a S.M.A.R.T. goal??? Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic & Timely. Just made this a little more complicated, didnt I. YOURE WELCOME! *if you’d like MORE detail on these “smart” goals, google smart goals yep. It’s that easy.*
Specific : Keep House better no? not specific? Ugh. Barely English? Psh! Fine. The end result is I dont want to have PILES ON PILES of paperwork and stuff to go thru this time next year. We have one room in our house that is just a cluster you know. We have another room that has a purpose, but its SOOOOOO cluttered. And generally, my dining room table is um well, generally you cant tell that theres an actual table under all that. Somethings under there
Measurable: dining room table will be available for *gasp* dining every Saturday night. And by available, I mean cleared and NOT by making a pile of paperwork to take upstairs to deal with later.
Attainable: There was a fantastic song by Chicago You’re a Hard Habit To Break awesome 80’s hit. And thats how this cycle of making paperwork piles is going to be for me. I learned a few years ago that this is a family trait. I come from a line of pilers, and apparently our spouses dont find it endearing. WTH? However, this IS attainable. If I can make a mail center downstairs, this will stop with the excuses. I may even have to change the way I get the mail. Maybe I only get it once or twice a week and deal with it then. This way its not an everyday chore OR maybe I do need to make it a daily chore like cleaning the litter boxes. Good times, ahead! The good news is Pinterest has ALL KINDS of organizing tips for me. I already started my board. *random but helpful side bar* Pinterest can be a FANTASTIC source to help you attain your goals. I just searched organizing had now have an awesome list of ideas. WooHoo! *
Realistic: Realistically, Id like to be totally cool with someone stopping by my house unannounced. Im willing to do this, and since hes tired of the clutter as well, DH is all in.
Timely: Mail Center by 18 Jan. that means I have 3 weeks. I think I have everything I need, I just need to put it all in one convenient location. Current paperwork situation ugh. This may take some time, so Im going to say 31 Jan. 5 weeks from today. Maybe I can make 5 huge piles and take them on, week by week. And by this time next year, Id like to be in the habit of dealing with paperwork immediately so that on December 26, 2015, I have no piles and frankly havent in a long time!
NOW thats just ONE goal. I may have to make this a dadgum series.
