Things Were Rolling Along Nicely Until...

Friday, January 30, 2015

They weren't.

I haven't done much blogging lately because there wasn't much new to talk about. We were keeping out heads above water financially. I was doing reasonably well at maintenance. I was running consistently if not aggressively, and I had my 2015 race schedule planned out and pretty much paid for.

Then in the past couple weeks things changed. Judith had the toe joint implant that she got two years ago removed and the joint was fused. The recuperation has been more painful than expected. Her foot is still in a cast and she needs a walker to get around the house. While that was going on, our pipes froze and burst, and we were a week without hot water before we could get a plumber who was paid with borrowed funds. Then I woke up Monday morning with my left calf four inches greater in circumference than my right and I was barely able to walk.

By mid-afternoon common sense kicked in and I called my doctor. She thought it could be a deep vein thrombosis, so I had to go in on Tuesday. After an ultrasound that was ruled out and I was sent home from the lab. They told me it was probably a burst cyst and the swelling should subside. This morning I got a call from the doctor's office saying I needed to see an orthopedist. I had to go through an automated call system to ask for an insurance referral and no one has gotten back to me. Meantime the bruising on my leg and ankle are getting really pronounced. I'll see what I can do about that in the morning.

Lots of hugs. Sounds like a lot of pain.

My husband is 68 and retired from the military so we have always been frugal. I enjoy watching the clips of Jeff Yeager on YouTube. I made sure my husband stayed in the Navy for 23 years and retired so we had health benefits.

OMG Vinnie! That'll teach me not to get right to your blogs...! Wish you had called me! DO let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do to help! The two of you must be having a terrible time getting stuff done around your place.

We've been haunted over the years by the frozen-pipes-bogeyman also and this past Tues. night I went into a panic when I woke up @ 4:30 a.m. to a stone-cold house. Fortunately it wasn't frozen pipes, but something on the furnace (a coupling? dunno) needed replacing. We have this one stretch of pipes that like to freeze when the temps plunge and these below zero nights coming up have me WAY nervous!

Hope you've gotten to the bottom of your troubles by now and hoping too that your wife heals quickly...she's got a shiny new bike to get out and enjoy! :-)

Wow! So very sorry to hear all this :-(( That is very mysterious about your calf, hard to believe all that is just from a cyst bursting.. I am getting sick of those automated messaging systems, can't seem to call any office these days without jumping through multiple hoops of press 1 for this then press 3 for that, grr. What ever happened to secretaries??? I certainly can feel Judith's pain -I had eight of my toes fused and pins put in, was the worst pain I ever experienced and I have experienced a lot.
A week to get a plumber for an urgent problem like burst pipes, totally outrageous!! I guess its fortunate you were not heating your home with water heat!!
I hope things turn around for you two, can't get any worse!

Stay strong and don't let health care system let you down!
I was glad it was not a blood clot, but this burst cyst seems to cause you much trouble.
