Making things happen at the gym

I'm getting my @$$ kicked and all I am doing is stretching.
And isometrics.
And the dreadmill.
And the arm bike.

I hurt, in a good way. It shows already after two weeks of PT for my shoulder and my new daily workouts. There's truth to muscle memory. I have awesome biceps. I hope the rest of my body remembers.

Back in the day (90's) it was body "sculpting" not building that we did in the gym. There was a time I could bench press my own weight. I wore lycra gym clothes and fuzzy leg warmers. AND the required poofy hair. I wish I had a picture.

The picture now is me on the floor, hands on belly and legs extended being told to lift both legs at the same time.
I tightened all those appropriate core muscles and lifted.
Nothing happened.
Try again.
I did two about 1 inch from the floor.

This is going to take some time.

    If you want a great laugh, in the 90's, I wore a thong leotard over my tights and the other women at Jazzercise would tell me that they "didn't have the body" for that. I told them, it isn't the body, it is the courage. Mind you, this was a size 18 leotard!

    LOL!! I was always naturally thin until after menopause so I have never been inside of a gym as an adult. If they smell anything like they did when I was young I will have to pass on them. LOL. Sounds like you are adapting, even without the poofy hair.

    I remember being there! It's amazing how your idea of "unfit" and "fit" changes as your body does. Last night I had my first session with the young trainer I will now be calling "the boy wonder"... he's 25... young enough to be my grandson! And I think he's trying to take it easy on the "old" lady, based on the starting weights he picked for me. And he even knows I'm a runner & triathlete. emoticon

    I kept having to tell him to bump up the weights for things like arm rows and lifts... he got the legs weight about right... but when we got to the core exercises? Yeah, that's what needs the most work, and the abs told me right away.

    Anyway... there is something to muscle memory, fitness set points, and maintenance through alternate activity. So just keep it up... you're doing GREAT! Progress may not look visible when you're thinking it's just a couple inches off the floor... but it's there! emoticon

    It is surprising how quickly our bodies respond. You will be doing those leg lifts like a champ in no time. Its like your brain just needs to reestablish a connection with those muscles. So important to work our core muscles. I love working arms because it's the one place on our bodies that we can really see our efforts pay off. But the core is what will hold our aging bodies upright.
