Looking ahead to a perilous weekend

Today was a day off for me so I took a long walk. It felt really good to be moving and to have all the time in the world to do so. The only downside was thinking about this weekend and the "danger" I'm going to be in at work. I knew when I got home that I had to make cookies for the "pot-luck" that will be set up at work which made me think about all the other food that will be sitting around tempting me.
We do a pot-luck almost every holiday weekend. Everyone signs up to bring something to eat that will last most of the weekend so we don't have to leave the premises for food when all the eating places will be busy. I have to admit that most of the time the food is amazing but it's not always the healthiest. The fact that it's within easy reach every time you walk into the stockroom is an invitation to over indulge. While there are a few healthy choices (fruit tray), most of the food falls into the "I really shouldn't eat this" category. Things like brownies, cookies, pasta salad, potato salad and other high fat, high calorie foods fill a 6-ft long table and coolers brought in to keep things cold.
I was asked to make cookies for this shindig. For the first time ever, I had a lot of trouble getting the cookies right. I burnt the first 2 trays on the bottom yet the top centers were still gooey. The next batch, I lost one tray to burning and none of them tasted quite right to me. My family assured me that, other than the burnt ones, the cookies were really good. When did I lose my ability to enjoy cookies? I mean come on, Cookie Monster is a close personal friend of mine. I'm blaming the oven because it's old and needs to be replaced for burning stuff BUT I have no excuse for the tasting part. I guess I have beaten my sweet tooth.....for the most part. (Last night I caught this blond lady stuffing a Butterfinger bar down my throat.)
I'm going to muddle through the weekend as best I can and hope the fruit tray is joined by a veggie tray. I will definitely be carrying my water bottles and a pack of sugar-free gum. Guess I'm as armed and ready as I'll ever be.
