How far would you travel to exercise?

Friday, July 10, 2015

I live in a small community in southern AZ, near the international border w/ Mexico. There is no where to swim where we are; no community pool, no fitness club. So, I drive to a fitness club in Tucson to swim twice a week. It was okay when I was working, since my office was 3-4 miles down the road from the club, but, now that I am retired, it is a ways to travel.

I have been ill for almost 2 weeks and have not done ANY exercise in that time. My plan today was to go to the pool, although I knew it would be a short swim without "going all out" as I am still recuperating. As I was finishing my swim after 19 minutes, I thought about the time it took me to get there.....I drove an hour (one way) to swim 19 minutes? Is it worth it?

To me, yes it is! I am trying to train for a triathlon, which so far isn't working out for me. I missed a tri this past weekend and will not be well enough to compete in Syracuse, NY in 3 weeks either. But, besides from the tri training, I am also concerned for my health. I have been ill (a lot) recently and pick up all sorts of nuisance germs easily. Not sure why, but can not seem to get well and stay that way, so driving an hour to get in a short swim is well worth the time and distance. This is MY HEALTH that I need to improve, and swimming is a great way to "get it done"!

Up here, we have hotels with indoor pools. Some sell monthly or annual passes to use the pool.

It helps your health so the drive is worth it.

Love swimming!! It's a drive yes, but to drive, if u turn on music and if u sing ur heart out, it's fun in just getting there.

Enjoy swimming. Hopefully, i 'll recover in the next 2months, than also start swimming again. Please slowly, yet steadily work ur way up. I start off at 15 minutes swimming, 15 treading water both r beneficial. In time I slowly work up to 2 hrs.

It is well worth the time. I am already planning a hike (with doctor approval) with a friend who is also recovering from surgery.

The location of the trail is about 90 minutes from home, but the hike and everything about the hike will be a soothing thing for my soul. Doing what you need to do the be healthier is worth whatever it takes.

Your comment that you've been picking up nuisance bugs and just generally not in great health made me think.....have you tried taking probiotics? Your immune system may need tweaking. I went through a 6 week bout of diarrhea from no apparent cause that was more of a nuisance than anything else. I didn't feel bad at all. I tried all the things my doctor suggested, but my husband's suggestion of probiotics was the only thing that stopped it. I used Culturelle.

You are so worth it! Sounds like a fun outing as I just love Tucson. I was thinking about my pool here. It is 22' round. Not exactly the best way to workout, but it works for me. If I was able, I would go just about anywhere for a good swim, hike or bike. YOLO! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Granny,

You are WORTH IT and you should travel that time to swim, as your exercise movement can knock the stuffing out of what is going on with you. Your movement, which God allowed you to have will get you well. I'm praying for you right now and calling on Jehovah-Rapha the God who heals, to come to your aide and assistance. The prayer that I pray will be according you your faith and I know that you have BIG FAITH, so girl just receive in the spirit what I'm praying right now for you, in my spirit and you ARE HEALED, because JESUS bore those stripes, just for you! The prayer was said, so RECEIVE IT and BELEIVE IT!!!

    Blessings!

Wow I love your commitment! I'm trying to get back into swimming myself after not doing it since high school. I figured I should do something productive with my other day off instead of spending it on the couch. Hope you feel better soon!
