Actually, this blog is about more than September goals, although I've set some and hope to follow through. Several of the blogs I've read lately have really provided good food for thought. I could plug myself into any one of them and report the same problems. On the advice of my oldest son, who also fights the weight battle but with more success since he is a weight lifter as well, I watched several videos that addressed some psychological aspects of weight control and suggested some back-up science. Several points echoed thoughts by one of my favorite authors about spirituality. When we make unhealthy choices, eat inappropriate portion sizes, binge eat whatever the reason, we are actually performing acts of violence against our bodies. This wonderful gift of a body, inhabited by the spirit of our Creator, attacked constantly with new, severe eating plans, weight gain and loss, gain and loss, with hardly ever a good word said about it when we view our reflection in a mirror.
My goal in September is to develop an awareness of when I am doing this. I don't expect to be perfect, old habits are deeply ingrained. To help, I joined a low sugar challenge in a hope to get my cravings under control, and a challenge which may encourage me to get more fiber. The exercise thing I already do pretty well, but it is not enough to off-set several servings of simple carbs a day. A mention of this resilient body in my gratitude journal not a bad idea either. We all know that over-eating is more than about the food. Food is essential to life. I just need it to nourish not only my body, but soul and spirit as well.
