Beck Trek Day 12, I Didn’t Die!

I actually did this fasting exercise on Sunday because it is a tradition in my religion that the first Sunday of every month is a day of fasting. We fast from Saturday evening to Sunday evening. The money that we would have spent on food is given to those who are truly hungry and in need. But the fast is for more than charity. Fasting brings a sense of emotional, physical, and spiritual clarity with it that I find very beneficial to have in my life on a regular basis. It feels like a day when the windows get cleaned and you can see everything with greater focus.

Because I have been doing this most of my life, I knew I wouldn’t die. But I did find the exercise interesting because I was able to note my own feelings and signs of hunger.

I don’t actually have that much stomach growling. Am I the only one? My stomach growls a little at the times when I would normally eat food, but that is not my greatest sign of hunger. I get tired, light-headed, a little irritable and my head hurts.

I realized how important this lesson is for me because I often think that I am not hungry because my belly isn’t aching and noisy like other people describe. Perhaps sometimes I wait too long to eat because I think I am not hungry when in fact I am. So, when I do eat, I might eat more than I should, or things that aren’t very healthy.

So many things to think about, and this is my fourth time through the book!

    What helpful ideas. I notice I get irritable and cranky and lose focus, my stomach says nothing, but that crankiness or a little headache probably means I need food.

    I'm also experiencing more discomfort in my head than in my stomach. Appreciate you sharing your considerable experience with fasting.

    Interesting what you say about not recognizing the hunger and then overeating. I've definitely done that. Sometimes when I endure hunger then I overdo it after. Hope to get it right today. Probably our bodies would work best and be most productive if we don't allow ourselves to get too hungry. But knowing that we can endure hunger, that it isn't so bad, allows us to live a better life.

    Interesting that even with lots of experience (4th time through Beck, lifetime of spiritual fasting) there are still "things to be learned"!!

    Stomach growling rare here. Lightheaded, shaky and fatigued senses here too (likely low blood sugar).
