Stressed Achilles, but turns out I'm okay

Wednesday, September 09, 2015

I bought a couple Achilles tendon bands that I wore yesterday when I ran. Turns out that's what made me sore. While they have really great reviews, and they fixed countless people, it turns out all those countless people are experiencing their Achilles pain in a different place than I do. There are three main places people usually experience Achilles pain:

1) Right at the point where the tendon attaches to the heel (right on the back of the heel)
2) an inch or so above #1
3) A couple more inches above #2, on the lower part of the calf.

#1 is the type of pain that is helped by the tendon bands. And that's a really common place to feel the pain, so it helps most people. The band goes straight across the location of those suffering from location #2. Guess which type I have. That's right... I'm a location #2 suffer! Awesome! So instead of relieving any soreness I was experiencing, it clamped down on my tendon while I was running and just worked the tar out of it. And you'll recall that while the runs weren't hard runs, there were two of them. Oops.

I went to the physical therapist today and told her what I'd done (and found out all about what I described above about how the bands help and why they hurt me) and she told me that it's okay for me to run again tomorrow - just do it without the bands. She assured me that I didn't do any damage to myself and that I haven't set myself back.

I did do the first week of Couch to 5K this morning with the one woman who came (the other two had good reasons. One has a migraine with this awful heat we're experiencing in So Cal, the other hurt her foot while hiking to Potato Chip Rock on Monday.) So it was mostly walking with some running. While I was running I felt pretty okay. Nothing worse than the soreness I sometimes feel from the left. So that fits the theory that I didn't really screw anything up. The PT worked on me, sent some electricity through me, and sent me on my way. I feel fine tonight.

As I was driving home from the kids' gymnastics session tonight and we approached my neighborhood I got kind of giddy as I told the kids, "I get to go run the loop tomorrow morning!" Once again I thought I'd screwed up and I made it through without a hiccup - just a reminder to be careful.
