Nancy Lamott: We Can Be Kind

Saturday, February 06, 2016

Just discovered Nancy Lamott -- and her iconic delivery of a great song, "We Can Be Kind".

The older I get, the more I value kindness. Way more important than intelligence or professional competence or wealth or a whole lotta other things! And it seems to me that one of the great strengths of Spark People is the kindness people show one another here. People do indeed walk the walk here.

Another great Lamott song? Everyone who's endured my joy in hyacinths and pileated woodpeckers and sparkly XC skis and all the small stuff which surrounds us free for the noticing will be able to anticipate that I also love her "Ordinary Miracles": Change begins with you and me. Each and every one of us lights a spark.

And there is, of course, nothing ordinary about the miracle of this Spark community!

How can I have missed the existence of this great singer? (1951-1995: RIP).

Sorry so late to the Lamott party! Yes she was a wonderful singer...SO sorry to have lost her far too early, like another one of my favorites, Susannah McCorkle. I love both of these singers and their terrific contributions! Loving Brasilian music as I do one of my favorite McCorkle albums is Sabia, all Brasilian. McCorkles mastery of multiple languages, including Brasilian Portuguese was remarkable.

Our SparkFamily is just such an amazingly positive, supportive community!

    Viva la SPARK!

Wow! What a heavenly voice and beautiful song and message! Thank you so much for the links! So sad she is no longer with us :-(
Its the warmth of this community that keeps me staying here. Its not usually in my nature to stay with one thing for very long, but gotta admit, really love it here, its a highlight of my day, especially being shut in these long dark days of winter.
I love that you share your joy in the flowers, birds and skiing, and can live vicariously through you! On my hike the other day we heard a nice birdsong and guess it was a blue jay, they make so many different sounds! We were hoping to see an owl or woodpecker but it was not to be. Every now and then Mom catches a glimpse of one swooping by her yard.
Currently waiting for a live webinar where six health experts will present why they think their food plans are best. Its running very late. Its called Food Fights -Health Network if you want to get in on it

The Dalai Lama said: "Be kind whenever possible.
It is always possible," What a powerful concept to
integrate into our lives and relationships at all levels.

And kindness to ourselves is the most challenging
aspect of this integration but will actually bring
the biggest rewards. For in remembering to be
kind to ourselves, we enhance our capacity to
    be kind to all beings.

What a wonderful singer, and what great themes... I listened to both and loved her clear voice and tones singing out the eternal themes of kindness and awareness of the change each of us brings to the world. You never know when your words will take root for someone else.

And I totally agree about the SparkPeople.com community. It's what has kept me together through my ongoing journey... we CAN be kind, and this community shows it! Thanks so much for sharing your uplift for the day!

I just pulled up Nancy LaMott on google play and I am listening to We Can Be Kind now. I had heard this song in the background somewhere along the way, but never really listened to it, so I guess you could say that I was not aware of her either.

I agree with you about the kindness of Spark People. Before Spark, I'd tried Weight Watchers online - meh. Then I used the WebMD weight loss program. That was very supportive and fun, but mostly because of one of the moderators. When she left, the community changed. She really was the glue that held that community together. There is no doubt that Spark is hands down the most supportive, kind, friendly online community I have ever met. One Sparker, who has since moved on, described it as "relentlessly optimistic."
