Goodbye March, Hello April???

Saturday, April 02, 2016

April 1st was a good day. No April Fool's pranks for me. The sun was shining so Daisy, Sheba and I sat outside for awhile in the afternoon. Daisy loves to sit and watch for any sign of a squirrel - she can sit patiently for a long time. Sheba just wants to chew on green things. I have catnip planted in the herb garden and it's starting to come up - that makes her happy. Me, I love to sit outside in the sunshine and read. It was a bit chilly yesterday but we managed to stay outside for awhile.

Last night Daisy and I rode along with Tom who needed to get some art supplies. The store he goes to is near a college campus and life was really happening down there. Tom went into the store, Daisy and I got out and walked a couple blocks. Apparently the new smells were really something - she nearly pulled me over a couple of times. But she also met two nice ladies who love dogs, she said hello to a young man carry some kind of food and the best thing was when we turned a corner there was a man and a DOG just ahead of us! She was in doggie heaven! In just 2 blocks (and back) I had more interaction with mankind than I typically have in a full 30 minute walk here at home. I loved smiling at people and stopping to chat. Maybe Daisy and I are going to have to go into the cities more often.

I am so glad that March is over - it has never been one of my favorite months and this one was right up there with other challenging March's. But I'm not sure it's really April either. Went to bed last night with a bit of wind, woke up to the wind chimes going crazy and the trees swaying while the wind roars through like a freight train AND snow! It's just a little bit of snow, you can still see the grass, but as I look out the window I can still see it coming down. We have a very large, very old maple tree in our back yard - one of it's branches came down last night too. Not the biggest one, but Daisy won't be able to drag it anywhere. So I guess today will be a good day to get some inside things taken care of.

I have been thinking and thinking about what "new" thing I should try for the month of April. I've been trying to meditate but it's not going very well - I think I must be more of a walking meditation kind of person because sitting quietly for more than 5 minutes is pretty challenging. I've also been looking into learning Norwegian. I have a box of Norwegian letters that my mom saved from relatives 'back in the old country' and I'm finally interested in what they had to say. A bit late in the game since my mom has been gone for almost 10 years now. I've signed up for some on-line thing for now because the next time I can go to a class anywhere close enough to drive is in September.

So I've concluded that I'm just going to "live" in April. I have a garden plan to make and I still need to work out a better routine for exercise. And I'm getting pretty anxious to get rid of a lot of the excess stuff around here - work clothes that have been in the closet for 7 years now because I'm no longer working; things I've put away because I bought a replacement (I currently have 2 sewing machines and a serger in my closet because I bought a really good sewing machine a couple years ago. It's time. We watched the Big Bang Theory this week. Sheldon had to replace his old laptop because it died and rather than recycling it he took Amy to a secret place - a huge storage locker filled with everything he had ever owned in his lifetime. Made me laugh because sometimes I feel like that's what I've done - saved things forever "just in case".

Happy weekend to all you Sparkers!

Been sick all week, so I read this one late.

Guess what? We had snow flurries here in Lexington, KY yesterday! I have not been out since my last doctor visit a week ago, but Hubby was out and said it was c-o-l-d! Not as cold as it gets in Minnesota, of course, but cold for here . . . especially in April.

Sounds like you have plenty to do. And it sounds like fun learning to read Norwegian. Does that not qualify as something new? Good luck; I hear it's a challenging language.

I'm wondering if there may be someone at the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church (Mindekirkan) in Minneapolis who could help you with your letters. Good for you on wanting to learn Norwegian! I had a couple of quarters of it in college many years ago. They had just started the class and it filled up right away during registration. I kept going to the instructor to see if a place had opened up, and I finally got in - not sure if someone had really cancelled or if he just got tired of me asking! I loved it and took two quarters but then left that school. Wish I knew more, but it was fun! I learned a verse of a Norwegian Christmas carol, and on Christmas I started singing it to my 90 year old Norwegian grandma. She joined right in with a big smile on her face!

Sounds like you need to read Marie Kondo's book "Sparking Joy" about getting rid of stuff in your house you don't need. It helped me SO much.

I don't like March much either...it is one month that can be VERY deceptive. It is cold today, and amazingly, tomorrow is supposed to be in the high 50's.

Were you in Dinkytown? Uptown? I love when I get to interact with all the kids around here.

    Spark on.
