My friend Sue has just left after a full 2 days of friendship and conversation. I met Sue when my oldest daughter was not quite 2 (she's almost 42 now) and she was pregnant with her her oldest son. Our husbands were in college together - both taking Pottery. After a couple of years apart we found ourselves living in the same small town barely a mile from each other. We became a safe place for each other, both of us alone all day with our little ones so we got together often to drink tea and let the kiddos play. When I went to the hospital to have daughter #2 (at 1 a.m. on a Monday morning), Sue was the angel who took in my oldest daughter until we could make other arrangements. Our time together was short - soon both of our families went in different directions. But we kept in touch and saw each other as often as we could arrange it.
The last time we were together was in 2009, the time before that maybe 2000. Yes the moment she arrived on Wednesday afternoon it was as though no time had passed. We talked and talked and talked. We had dinner and talked some more. About 10:00 p.m. my husband came up from his studio (as he typically does at the end of the night) and I was amazed that several hours had passed.
We had a wonderful visit. We had time to catch up on about 20 years of things, talking about events of the past and hopes for the future. We promised not to let so many years go by before the next visit and I plan on keeping that promise.
I love that there are some people in our lives who are always in your life wherever they live!
