I don't want to

Tuesday, June 07, 2016

I don't want to count calories or banish favorite foods.
I don't want to do weekly weigh-ins and monthly measurements.
I don't want to obsess over this.

I want to feel better.
I want to be comfortable.
I want to be able to run with my kids.
I want to look healthy.

Is it possible to have it both ways?

Honestly, if you had said that you wanted to eat more healthfully and move more healthfully and live more healthfully then absolutely you can do that without obsessing, or counting calories, or banishing foods.

All you need to do is start making healthier choices more often than you make less healthy choices - choose to fill 3/4 of your plate with non-starchy veggies and fruits most of the time, limit your portions and how often you have less healthy choices, and spend some time exploring new foods and new recipes. No need to obsess, but a bit of focus on gradually changing your preferences to wanting less sweet and less oily but wanting more fresh, whole foods will definitely be more healthy and should leave you feeling much better.

Same thing with wanting to run with your kids - just start choosing to move more each and every day. Walk with your kids to the park, to the store, or to the library. Take your kids on a hike, or go exploring a nearby park. Just start doing more and more physical play with them and you'll be able to do even more.

The thing is, the above will definitely improve your health, and will leave you feeling better and more able to DO the things that you want to do. It may or may not cause the number on the scale to go down, and may or may not help you "look" healthy. If the scale and the look are your priorities, then I'm afraid that you'll likely have more success by counting calories and obsessing a bit...

I cannot think of a trick to have it both ways. Unfortunately, the journey takes hard work. Best of luck to you!

Sounds utopian. :) what we want the most can often be the hardest to obtain but also the most valuable. No one can buy good health, no one can buy a trim body, no one can buy healthful choices. You have to decide and then go after it.
