Love my New Bike!

Thursday, July 14, 2016

Yesterday I got a brand new coral Townie Electra bicycle and I absolutely LOVE it. I haven't gone cycling since I was in my 20's, in the Toronto area.

I tried riding my old mountain bike but I've shrunk, height wise, and it was too big for me. My uncle gave my Mom and I a bike and I couldn't ride that one either; I am very unsteady on my feet and have poor balance.

I did some research and found out that Townies by Electra are crank forward bikes, which means the pedals are forward on the frame, and not directly under the seat. Which means the seat can be low enough so that you can put your feet on the ground while seated, and still extend your legs enough to pedal. I test drove a men's Townie a month ago and liked it but wanted a girl's bike in a pretty color, so waited until yesterday when my pretty coral colored Townie came in. The bike was way out of my price range but when I first started talking about it last month my best friend reminded me that she owed me money and said she'd order the bike for me. I was thrilled!

So, yesterday the bike and I went on our first ride. We did almost 4 miles (6.02 km). I had a blast. I couldn't sleep, I was so excited, and after only 3 hours sleep woke up early to go for another ride...but it was raining. I waited for it to stop and went for a short ride, only 2.24 miles (3.6 km). I would have liked to have gone further but the seat was really hurting and black clouds were rolling in.

I burned 575 calories yesterday, and 345 this morning.
Prior to this, I have been doing great with walking regularly, while pushing my dog in the stroller, but I gained weight! I think it is water weight because it is super hot and humid and I didn't take my water pill yesterday. Hopefully I'll lose weight now that I'm riding a bike again, but even if I don't, I am having a blast!

I looked at one like that yesterday and wondering if I can manage Toronto traffic and drivers. For now I'm walking. I used to ride everywhere in Montreal , but that was years ago. City drivers are so distracted that I'm not sure I will do this.
