Resolve

Friday, September 16, 2016

I've been hearing this word a lot in the past couple of weeks. The dictionary defines the verb resolve as: to decide firmly on a course of action; the noun resolve is: firm determination to do something.

I have resolved my dilemma over the trip to Wyoming - we are going. My Spark friend MARINGAL tells me 'there's never enough money for vacations and children'. Well, I had 5 children with only one income (mine) and they are all grown and independent. One of the things Tom and I want to do is travel more now that we can - so if that's what's important to us, the money will be there for travel. I just need to do some creative accounting, which I am very good at!

In our relationship, Tom is typically the one to think through every possible scenario and come up with all kinds of reasons why NOT to do something. Sometimes this is a very good trait. When we were first married we decided to spend an overnight in Duluth in mid-March. It had been a beautiful week, sunny every day in the mid-30's which is perfect winter weather in Minnesota. As he packed up I saw him throw in a snow shovel, a bag with extra winter jackets and boots, and several other snow-emergency type things like blankets and snacks. Honestly, I thought he was nuts but I was so in love that I didn't question him. Imagine my surprise when we woke up the next morning to about 20" of snow (lake effect, Duluth is on Lake Superior). Tom had to shovel the car out and I was very glad to have those boots and winter jacket (I had just worn tennis shoes and a light fall jacket). I have never questioned his preparedness since!

But back to Wyoming. We talked yesterday afternoon. If we take the money thing away, what other reasons could we have to NOT go. Neither of us could come up with anything viable. This feeling of possibly being needed - just not going to happen. Crystal is dealing with her grief in her own way and I respect that. Also, given what we are now dealing with it seems like a good idea to do things now because you just never know what tomorrow will bring.

So I'm thinking about what foods I can bring because we do have a little kitchen available to us. I want to keep to my healthy eating plan as much as possible. I'm excited to have some new places to take Daisy walks - it's so beautiful there and the weather should be perfect! It feels good to actually make a decision!

I'm just now catching up on your blogs, and I'm so glad that you have decided to go! I agree with your friend MARINGAL - we can always make up an excuse for why not to do things. Time passes us by every minute, every hour. If you had already made plans for it, then follow through! I know you have been hit by so many hard days recently - it seems to me this vacation will be a much needed mental and spiritual break for you!

Enjoy your trip! You and Tom sound a bit like me and my DH. I appear to share some of Tom's traits. emoticon My DH is far more spontaneous than I.
