Well I did it! And lived!
I was so scared to try Orangetheory. One of my friends - a superfit vegan - is obsessed with it, and has been telling me about it for a year. I just haven't been in the mindset to hear her. But she recently posted a fb picture of herself with a normal person at orangtheory and I thought - OK! I'm going to try this!
So I called and scheduled a free class and one of the things that stood out to me was how often the idea of community came up. That's really important to me in a gym, and I haven't had that for a long time. So that definitely helped me feel excited.
I decided that I should go at 7am because if I waited any later I would have too much time to think about it and probably chicken out.
I set my alarm for 6am, because I had to be there at 6:30 for the orientation. When the alarm went off, I didn't even hear it. My husband had to shake me awake. He gently reminded me that I had somewhere to be! All the depression messages in my head were saying that it would be too hard, that I wouldn't like it, that I would be the fattest one there, that I should just stay home. But I threw the covers back and tried not to think at all. I just went and put my gym clothes on, and most importantly, my shoes, and walked out the door into a beautiful sunrise!
When I got there, the front desk girls were already wide awake and excited to see me. They had me fill out some paperwork and then it was time to go into the studio to get setup on the machines. First they put a heart rate monitor on me, and it actually fit!
Orangetheory is set up in 3 stations: treadmills, rowing machines, and weights. I started on the rowing machine. The coach showed me proper form, and told me what to expect during the class. You watch your heart rate up on a monitor that shows how hard you're working, by using a color coding system. It's pretty genius!
The class was really fun! Everything happened so fast that I didn't have time to get bored or worry about what people were thinking. I was just focused on keeping my heart rate in the orange or green zone. There were lots of high 5s with people throughout the class. Once it was over I was feeling pretty good, and now this afternoon I'm definitely feeling that soreness. I'm going to sleep REALLY well tonight! I did like 100 squats though, so I'm not sure I'll be able to get out of bed tomorrow! haha
I would DEFINITELY recommend Orangetheory Fitness to people of any size. If you are a heavier person, they show you all the things you need to do to to make it work for you - and it definitely worked. My numbers showed that I burned 548 calories in an hour and I don't feel like I pushed harder than was necessary.
I signed up to start next month!
