Orangetheory: 35 classes

Tuesday, June 06, 2017

I did my first 5K Sunday morning. Well, I only ran a tiny little bit of it. It was very rough terrain through woods and meadows. But I did it. And I didn't finish last. I came in 80 out of 102 in my age group, and 123 out of 155 overall. My time was 58:33. I'm okay with that. I stopped to take pictures three different times.

Yesterday I did my 35th class at OTF. Still haven't lost any more weight. But I feel like I'm getting a tiny bit stronger. I can do some of the exercises with 15 lb weights. I'm still waiting for some kind of dramatic transformation. Still waiting for an energy boost. Still looking for the diet that actually works. The amount of exercise I'm doing burns about 1500 calories a week. My daily calorie intake is about 1300-1500. I have a little break between the regular school year and summer school, so I'm getting a bit more sleep.

I'm not sure what else I can do. Supplements? Increase from three classes a week to 5? I've tried gluten-free (inconvenient) and paleo (yuck) and low carb...all without any results really. The Whole 30 made me feel really sick after a while. None of those things are really sustainable. I need to switch doctors; my doctor is leaving my medical group, so I'm going to find one closer to home. It's a complicated process due to the HMO thing. Maybe my new doctor will be willing to increase my thyroid medication dosage, and that might help.

It gets discouraging going to these exercise classes with all these super fit size 0 young soccer moms, seeing them swing around 25 pounds weights like it's nothing and run 9 mph without gasping. The internet is filled with stunning before-and-after transformations. None of this is me. I'm a fat, middle aged schoolteacher who just flails along, sweating and gasping, barely able to keep up. I'm losing maybe half a pound a month. My clothes are not fitting any better. My self-esteem is not improving. I don't really know if it's the hypothyroid thing, or the menopause thing, or both...my metabolism is not increasing. Does this get any better, or am I just wasting 159 bucks every month?

You are way ahead of me. Walking is hard for me and I haven't been doing my walks. I have tried to increase my movement and steps. Running or entering a 5K may be in my future. I hope so. BUT YOU actually did one. GREAT JOB!
