Food for thought from a diabetic
Tuesday, October 03, 2017
For the last 10 years, when I became a type 2 diabetic, I have been focusing on losing weight. Losing weight helps to lower your blood sugars. It helped at first then I learned that I could still eat sugary foods with the medicine and keep my blood sugar under control. That only lasted a little while because then you become insulin resistant, which has happened to me. So I kept on focusing on losing weight and my control on sugary foods kept getting more and more out of control. About a week ago I started focusing on my disease and not on weight loss and something has started happening to my food cravings. They have become less and less. With the help of my diabetic educator, I am eating less sweets. I have cut out most foods that are artificially sweetened and I am eating whole unprocessed foods. instead of a candy bar when I am craving sweets, I am eating grapes or berries. That has helped me tremendously. I have been having an egg every morning and toast, which really feels me up. Every time I want to eat a sugary or processed food, I say to myself "Is this food helping me keep my diabetes in check and keeping my blood sugars in down?" I have now turned my focus on getting my blood sugar in control and not losing weight. That will come with eating healthy foods.
