The whole issue of FALL PREVENTION has taken over my life! I took the training in December and am now a Tai Ji Quan; Moving for Better Balance Instructor. I've been teaching three classes a week. Then I got invited to the training to be a Coach for A Matter of Balance, which is also a Fall Prevention Program but a very different approach.
Now I'm working out what I want to do with all this training and work. It's a great place to be in. This is something that is VITAL for us older adults. For now, I called everyone in my Monday class and told them not to come tomorrow. The Matter of Balance training will end tomorrow evening and I'll get my Coach Certificate. Wednesday and Thursday, I'll be teaching the Tai Ji Quan. There was enough interest to continue, at least for now.
I really like the Matter of Balance philosophy. You take 10 or so seniors and have them commit to one meeting a week for 8 weeks. You give them snacks...snacks are SO important (I think HEALTHY here.) There are 2 "coaches" not just one, for better flow and to have someone to write on a flip chart when needed while the other interacts with the group. It's all about the participants coming up with their own answers (maybe from the discussion and someone else's idea) to their problems that may cause them to fall. Exercise is a part of it, and their is a simple exercise routine they will take home with them, but no big commitment to exercise is required. (I think of SparkGuy and his 10-minute at a time play here.) It's a natural to feed all the other exercise programs of the Senior Center, gym memberships, etc.
