Trauma changes you

Thursday, June 14, 2018

Sometimes I think about how I did things in the past and then I try to do those same things now in an attempt to get back on track.

A few days ago my husband shared a presentation a friend of his was working on. His friend is a chaplain in a hospital. In it he shares how once a person has been through a traumatic experience, they change, and therefore the way in which they approach life becomes different.

This struck a chord with me because it got me thinking how, if one has been through a traumatic experience, the coping mechanisms they previously used may no longer work because their experience of life has fundamentally changed. Going forward requires coping mechanisms that incorporate this new experience of life and it makes sense that the "old methods" may not be working as well.

So, I'm struggling to maintain my weight for many reasons. Lots of which were not there when I first started on the maintenance path. I keep wanting to "go back" but that doesn't allow for what I have been through over the last five or six years. So, it's not really rewinding. It's starting a-fresh, embracing who I have become and learning how to manage my weight within this new set of circumstances.
