Practice makes permanent— not perfect

I’m learning that I need to practice better habits. While I’ve always heard that practice makes perfect, it’s just not true. If you practice wrong, that’s what you learn and that’s what is cemented in your mind.
Part of why eating healthy is so hard for me is that I’ve been “practicing” wrong for years and I’ve learned how to eat the wrong way. I’m not going to be hard on myself if I mess up because making these lifestyle changes is contrary to what I’ve done for most of my life. If I mess up, it’s one mistake, not one that’s going to mess up my whole diet.
Today I realized that, although I didn’t stay below 1000 calories a day this week, since I bounced back after making mistakes, I was able to lose four pounds. I have to remind myself that the cheating only hindered my weight loss, but that if I DO mess up, mistakes don’t have to hinder me from continuing on.
