Who is that in the mirror??

Tuesday, January 08, 2019

Hello out there
My name is Winnie. I live in Toronto for 9 months and Florida for 3. I am 71 years old, in two days, and I live a good life with my partner of 6 years, large family and good friends. I retired from a late life career (divorce can be a real motivator) in commercial real estate management in 2012 to take an art program for the next two years. So, I have nothing to complain about. BUT, every morning when I look in the mirror I think, "who the heck is that"? Over the course of 40 years I have gained 60 pounds and every couple of years another few pack on. I am very fortunate to have no serious health problems, other than arthritis, although a mixture of mild narcolepsy and chronic Restless Leg Syndrome is challenging to control as the medications are opposites; one is intended to increase alertness while the other is intended to calm jumpy nerve endings.
I play pickleball a couple of times a week and otherwise don't get enough exercise (not a fan of exercise- I know, "who is"?) I mostly eat well. My European early beginnings gave me a preference for (real) pumpernickel breads, homemade and nutritious meals but....my difficulties come down to portion control and evening snacking (I often go to bed early to avoid foraging).
I read today that blogging can help, so here I am.
I am not concerned about getting older; just the ever-increasing weight which I fear will eventually lessen my ability to enjoy life. I would also love to look in the mirror and recognize the person looking back at me. The arthritis is also not helped by the extra weight. I am 5'4" and 186 pounds- I would be happy to get down to 150 pounds.
Looking for motivation and tips
Thanks for reading

Portion control and exercise are important but also hard. Try small doable goals. Like increasing water intake. Eating more whole foods. Good luck!
