Last night was the first time I wrote out a gratitude list before I went to bed. At first, I wrote down 3 things I was grateful for:
1. My dogs
2. My horses
3. My friends

Then I wrote down one more:
4. My life

And that really got me thinking. I've made it past middle age when many of my friends and family didn't. Some of that is because I've always taken pretty good care of myself, not the best, but pretty good. And that got me to thinking some more. How about if I start taking the BEST care of myself? Then what would my life look like and what more would I have to be grateful for?

So, the good news, for me, is that thinking that way, about what I am grateful for, was a great way to go to sleep and, best of all, stay asleep all night. I didn't quite make 7 hours (my goal), but I also didn't lie awake between 1 and 5.

This lesson bears repeating because I want to know if this simple activity is going to help cure my insomnia. I am trying other things, too - lighter evening meal, snack before bed, no tv, internet or phone for half-hour before bed, cool bedroom temp, darker shades. But the gratitude list is the thing that got to my mind, which is what I often can't turn off in the middle of the night.
