Motivation Ain't Where It's At!

If you are waiting for motivation to kick in before you undergo a permanent change, you'd better settle in for the long haul, because it's going to be a looooooooooong wait!

Motivation, will power, and goals will sustain you for a while, but what will keep you going is consistency, habit, and the desire to maintain results.

I'm a very regular exerciser- Have been for decades now. And you know what? Most days I am NOT motivated to work out! I am not even much motivated to get out of bed in the morning, let alone put on workout clothes and pick up heavy stuff in the name of fitness.

Why do I do it? Because it's just part of my normal morning routine, which goes exactly like this:
1. Wake up
2. Put on exercise clothes/brush teeth
3. Eat breakfast
4. Bible study/quiet time
5. Workout
6. Exit exercise clothes

There is no way anyone is going to feel highly motivated to exercise consistently for years and years on end. There are REASONS people stay consistent, but being consistently excited and motivated isn't usually one of them.

The main reason is that they want the end results. When I was younger, this had to do with physique. Now that I'm in my 50's, it has more to do with my health.

Think about this: Why do you go to work every day? Do you consistently wake up thinking "Whoo hoo! Work! Let's jump right out of bed and get to it!"?

I highly doubt it.

You go to work because you want the end result, which is probably a paycheck, and that is probably because you want to pay the bills and be able to have the lifestyle you do, or even a better one.

Plus, it's just what you do on work days- You go to work.

And there, my friends, is the reason people who exercise consistently exercise consistently.

Because it's just what they do on exercise days.

They exercise.

It's a habit that may have started with strong motivation (like a paying job does), but keeps going because of consistency and the desire for continued results.

Like the old saying goes, "Fake it 'til you make it".

You'll get results even if your heart isn't in it.

    Yep - and that "it's just what we do" mentality can be used in lots of areas to get over rough ground.

    Last year I was prescribed a medicine that I had to apply every day - without fail. For a year. The Dr. was not encouraging - not of the medicine's efficacy - but of my ability to stick with it. My answer? I brush my teeth every day ... I guess I can paint my toenail every day too. He was thrilled with my success - but then - it's all a matter of how you approach things, right?

    100% true. Consistency is key. I treat my workouts like my job and never miss. Working out IS my job that I also happen to love. No chore to it.

    Yes! It's all about routine. And I daresay that a terrible diet is partially about routine as well. 'It's how I eat/it's how I cope/It's quick and I don't care...' I daresay these thoughts can also become routine unless we can break free.

    I think the biggest thing that kicks my $%^& is a lack of routine. The nature of my job is that I'm "on call". -- I would like to create a routine that allows me to stay consistent, but income is tied to working... (I've had mornings where I've had to take 3 or 4 different "detours" in my plans for the day before 10 am! emoticon I "make it work", but by the time I get home (in the winter), the PM darkness causes me to just shut down & veg.

    Obviously, this is a work-in-"progress" for me?! -- I may post the statement on my bedroom mirror: "You'll get results even if your heart isn't in it."

    Great blog - and so true for me! As I try to pry myself from the recliner and go out for a walk before game time, this was just what I needed to get me off my butt! Thanks for the push. It's just what I do - get 10,000 steps in daily!
