Early morning workouts?

I've been going to Planet Fitness since November. Kind of hate it. I get out of work between 4 and 5, and by the time I get to the gym, it's mobbed. The crowded part doesn't bother me as much as the fact that most of the people there are just sitting on the gym equipment, taking selfies and posting to Instagram instead of actually using the machines. I watched one guy sit on a machine for a full half hour, just playing on his phone. I'm there to work.

At Orangetheory, the workouts are all planned in advance, and the coaches guide you through all the moves. At a regular gym, I'm on my own. I try to plan things in advance, but when there are people just hanging out on the equipment I had planned to use, a Plan B workout is kind of a disappointment. I've been having crappy workouts, skipping the days when it's too crowded, and I've gained 4 pounds. Not cool.

So...I've been setting my alarm for 4 a.m., and heading to the gym before work. It's much better. The place is almost empty, and all the people are actually there to work out and not to look cute pretending to exercise. I'm not as exhausted as I thought I would be. I've been rather energized. I will probably still go after work a few times a week...heading for the treadmills instead of the weights. I have been looking up exercises using the cable pulley machines. Maybe if I try to really up the amount of strength training I'm doing, I will eventually see some results.
