And then we had lights

Wednesday, March 27, 2019

Well, we did always have lights but only the bare minimum. But now I can turn on everything - all at once if I so desired! It's a rather freeing feeling to no longer have to restrict electricity usage.

But I learned that I absolutely CAN live without TV, Internet, the Microwave, Slow Cooker, and Hair Dryer if I had to. In fact, life wasn't so bad after all.

Today the electricians came at 7:45 a.m. - my DH is rarely up that early in the morning. And I woke up late today so I didn't have as much time as I'd anticipated to do what I needed to do. The morning started off a bit rough. By 8:05 a.m. the power was off! WHAM! Sooner than they said! We hadn't even had breakfast yet, but at least we were up and dressed.

I settled in to read. I was okay with spending the morning enjoying a good book. That didn't exactly happen. It turns out, my DH was very restless. He couldn't go into his studio because it's in the basement and without electricity there's not much he can do in the dark. So about every 10 minutes he came into the living room to update me on the progress! In 4 hours I did not get much reading done.

By noon they were close. While we were eating lunch the power company came back to turn back on our electricity on the outside. Then the guys had to turn it on inside. I heard them tell DH to back way up - precaution for in case it didn't work I guess. But IT WORKED! But now they had to check circuit by circuit so I decided to clean the house. By the time they would be gone I would be able to vacuum - thank goodness, it had been too long.

We had no idea who this company was when we hired them. I found them on Angies List and was happy with their reviews. I can't say enough wonderful things about them. They were patient with all the questions, they worked so well together (like a choreographed dance - each man knew what his responsibility was), and they were nice to Daisy who finally must have decided they were just moving in with us so she may as well stop barking.

Oh, the most important thing - they found something pretty major with the wiring going into our meter box. First, it was the wrong kind of wire - didn't match up with the rest of the wiring. Second, apparently there are 7 metal-like wires twisted together inside the black coating (when Tom talks about wires I think WIRE, but these wires were about 1/4" in diameter and sturdy) and whoever did the electric work out there cut off 4 of them. A very big no-no according to the electrician. We probably bought the house that way. AND there was evidence of burn marks which means we very easily could have had a fire.

I am so grateful for finding this company. They even cleaned up after themselves - the youngest member was sweeping down my basement steps. I'm quite sure it was more our dirt and Daisy's hair than anything they brought in but he said "Well, we've been up and down for a couple of days now dragging in dirt, now we need to clean it up." They are teaching him well!

My world tonight is ending on a happy note. I think I'll go watch a little TV, since I can! Wishing you all a great evening and a happy Thursday! OH - and we had a 62 degree day today - really felt like Spring!

Well, Kathy, you wrote this a while back, but I've been gone and am just catching up here. Sounds like you had trouble with the electricity and found a really good company to fix it. I'm so glad it didn't get to the point where you had a fire! That would have been terrible, so yes, I can see why your day ended on a happy note when the guys found the problem and averted disaster.

I'm so glad it all turned out well--a little bit like a couple of years ago when your backyard tree posed a risk and you were concerned about it and all of a sudden the right guys happened to come along, and they offered to to cut it at a reasonable rate. You're lucky, my dear, to have guardian angels watching over you!

Life without power is no fun. I grew up with no running water or indoor facilities. We did have electricity, but no other amenities like we have now. Our house is all electric, so when the power goes out, we have nothing, not even water as we have a well. I learned many years how to manage with very little. I don't want to return to those days, but know that I can and will survive if I have to.

Glad the electricians found the wires that had been cut, they surely saved you from a huge disaster. Enjoy the evening tv. 62* is a nice way to finish the day. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My hubby's an Electrician and he's told me many of these 'horror stories' that he's found behind walls and ceilings. So glad you found a good one who knows his stuff and did a great job. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy Thursday with electricity that works! It is so nice when you have a professional company that does things right and is thoughtful enough to clean up after themselves also! I'm so happy that this risky situation was upgraded and now you no longer have any worries.

It's always an excellent sign of good people when they are nice to your doggie! emoticon
