2019 Has Been Challenging

Saturday, April 06, 2019

Wow...the beginning of this year has been a whirlwind....my mom & dad moved here which meant I was the boots on the ground for any work on their new house and our family physically moved them. Their brave move and the adjustments they've had to go through finding new doctors, new grocery stores, new everything has been painful for them at times. I've found myself on my knees asking for God to help many times. My dad has already been in the hospital twice this year. He is normally very healthy for 90 (still very independent) but his ninety year old gallbladder really needs to come out because it gives his liver fits when it spits out gallstones and plugs things up! Found a surgeon this week who sees no reason why his age should be a factor so my dad is mulling that decision over now. My tenth grandchild was born.....what a cutie and a joy! It did mean I missed an entire night of sleep though which may have contributed to me having bronchitis for 3 weeks...I rarely ever get sick and certainly not for that long but perhaps the missed sleep and the stress I've been under didn't help. We have also had multiple rounds of company this year. I came home from the doctor and went to bed and let the company take care of me during one of those rounds.

My husband has been in the hospital twice with pneumonia....he was just discharged two days ago. (I missed another entire night of sleep during his first stay.) My 'routine' has honestly been just to survive. This last hospital stent had us in the emergency room one whole day waiting on a room to come open. And you know how it is...you don't want to leave the room because that's when the doctor will come in....so I ended up breaking my long streak of getting my 5+ servings of produce and 8+ glasses of water that day because I didn't want to walk to the cafeteria and miss something. (Next time I'll throw more water and fruit in my backpack before I walk out the door :)

Life happens and even though good habit streaks are important, in the long run sometimes other things really do get in the way. I did find that there is a lull in the afternoons in the hospital and I got in a 20 minute walk in the halls one day. It felt really good to move! The hospital also calculated calories in their meals and I discovered the sparkpeople nutrition tracker feature of "Add Quick Entry" so I kept my practice of daily food tracking. That's a handy tool!

Looking back over the last few months, as crazy as things have been at times with not being able to keep an exercise routine or even a routine period, I've been able to keep my weight within about a 3 lb range for the past month, about 5 lbs the past 3 months, about 6 lbs the past 6 months and 7 lbs for the past year...from highest weight to lowest weight. (Gotta love weightgrapher.com!) It's not been easy with such craziness but I'm beginning to realize that's just the way it is sometimes. There are calm times and crazy times...good habits have helped me maintain my weight during the craziness. In my life, it seems there is more crazy than calm! I sure haven't had much time to be active on sparkpeople past tracking what I eat.

It doesn't always feel like I'm doing a good job with my habits when I'm in a whirlwind I can't control but today is a calm day and I have a minute to look back and be encouraged. I really am hanging in there in trying to keep a healthy lifestyle and maintain my weight in spite of the whirlwind. If things don't go like I wish they had on a particular day, I try to remember what I'd tell a friend...draw a line and move on. Get back up and keep going. It's hard to give yourself credit, but today, I'm giving myself a little pat on the back for not giving up!

CREDIT!!! Absolutely! emoticon in the midst of challenging circumstances. Yes, my dear, a true maintainer you are!!! 7 lbs. fluctuation in a year amid the challenge is a job emoticon

For reference, 7 lbs. of fluctuation would represent +/- 3% for a 116,67 lb. person. Excellent work lady! Truly!!

Hope things settle down soon so you can catch your breath, rejuvenate and restore your reserves. Take care!

Having gone through this myself, I can relate. You DO have to give yourself credit. Talk to yourself in the bathroom mirror. Remind yourself of your achievements and challenges. Take a big breath, "Okay, I CAN do this." Keep up your efforts. You won't regret it.

Wow, that is an exhausting start to the year. Hopefully it will smooth out for you. The bronchial virus that is going around has been wicked. My sister had a month of that one and I am just finishing it. UGH. Be Well!
