Beyond....

There has been a lot of advertising these past few weeks and significant stock market activity surrounding the arrival of Beyond Meat. The product has been touted as the ultimate replacement for animal meat, just what the rapidly growing population of vegetarians and vegans need in their diets. And so as I flipped through my stash of weekly flyers on Wednesday, there front and centre on the Sobey's flyer was a full colour image of Beyond Burger, just in time for our long weekend here in Canada, Victoria Day.
I don't normally shop at Sobey's but because they were also offering first of the season local Nova Scotia asparagus I chose to get the rest of my groceries there and check out the burger. emoticon They come packaged "fresh" even though they are not made at the store...hmmm? The packaging looks environmentally responsible ( plain cardboard sleeve with minimal coloured labelling) but the patties are each in a separate plastic cup within the sleeve...second hmmmm? The nutrition label shows 20g protein (good) and just 13% daily RDA of sodium (good). It is stated that all ingredients are natural, there is no soy and everything is non GMO. The ingredient list however is lengthy with many items most of us would never recognize. And then, the big hmmmm... package of two, 113gm total weight, C$7.99. Yikes! I have been known to make a few yummy veggie burgers from lentils, oatmeal, cooked beets and various spices with no additives for several dollars less than that. BTW, the asparagus was amazing! emoticon emoticon

    Not terribly interested in the Beyond Meat to begin with... I may check out the Impossible Burger when it comes to my local Burger King, if ever. The Impossible Burger won in
    a taste test against the other at Business Insider. I guess the product is supposed to appeal to meat eaters, that's the point. But I don't want that, at least I don't think I do. I completely understand why the burgers are plant-based but being made to appeal to meat eaters--global warming is going to render real meat either unavailable or even more expensive to buy than either of these faux meats. The future is almost here and it looks very bad. Many people don't seem aware of this yet, but I see it clearly.

    Bought them once to grill. It’s good for someone with a meat craving as they resemble it so much. And a good way for meat eaters to potentially eat less meat if they catch on.

    They are horribly expensive. And once you eat mostly plant based and adapt to that, a juicy burger can be a turnoff. And the variety of bean or lentil-based burgers you can make is endless. Meat eaters can choose from beef, chicken, or turkey. That’s it.

    Black bean burgers made at home are pretty inexpensive -- I think that the "pricey" vegan burgers are probably premium priced because they mimic actual beef better but not everybody wants that!!

    I had no idea that condos were so reasonably priced in your next of the woods: gotta be appealing for retirees right across Canada!!

    Interesting! I know the alternative meat market is about to explode & everyone will be jumping on the bandwagon...& I would expect the good, the bad, & the ugly to reveal itself at our grocery stores! Time will tell what makes or breaks in the field! Stay tuned....
