Exhausted from sitting around all day
Monday, May 20, 2019
Granted, that sitting was being done in the left field bleachers at Alumni Field, where I got my wish for a rain out on Sunday and games being postponed to Monday when I could go and watch them. You know that old saying about being careful what you wish for? Totally relevant to this situation, because the weather was cold and windy, and the pitcher that shut Michigan down for 11 innings, before the Wolverines eked out a walk off win in 12 on Saturday, well, she was at it again, earning a shutout win in game 1, and then hitting a home run and shutting down the Michigan offense until the very last inning of the second game, leading the James Madison Dukes to an upset victory over my alma mater. That pitcher's name is Megan Good, and she was great over the past 4 days.
I wore a sweatshirt and jacket to the ballpark, but was soon shivering in the 52 degrees and near constant wind. We'd get a reprieve every once in a while, as the sun reminded us of its existence every 30 minutes or so, for an all too brief moment before sliding back behind the clouds. But that wind, man, that was the harsh part, it just would not quit. I was wishing I'd brought a heavier sweatshirt. During the second game, I was wishing I'd gone out to my car between games and found the windbreaker I had in the vehicle, that might have come in handy. But alas, the weather, and Michigan's lack of offense made for a rather miserable day.
And now it's up to the Detroit Tigers tomorrow to salvage a ballpark weekend. On the good side, they're playing the worst team in baseball, the Miami Marlins. On the other side, the Marlins are coming in on a three game winning streak, while the Tigers have dropped 6 and a half in a row. The half is because they were losing 5-3 to Oakland on Sunday when the umps called the game on account of rain. Because of the game situation at the time it was called, the game is suspended, not official, and it will resume in September, with the Tigers designated the home team for the end of this game, even though the resumption will happen in Oakland. Odd situation, to say the least, but at least the Tigers didn't lose their 7th in a row yesterday.
Here's to them getting back to the winning side of things Tuesday, not least because Tuesday is my birthday, and after today's games, I really would like a ballpark pick-me-up!
