EU Elections

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

So tomorrow we get to vote in the EU elections despite the fact we were meant to have left the EU in March. Many remain inclined people are discussing how to vote tactically for a candidate from a 'remain supporting party'. A friend of mine posted on facebook that he intended to vote Lib dem. I questioned why not vote Green? So started a discussion. Someone linked to a so called tactical voting site which suggested voting Lib dem in every single area of England. No source data, no explanations, just assertions that every one should vote Lib dem.

Coincidentally the woman who set up the site happens to be a Lib dem voter. Now fancy that! I raised these points in the 'discussion'. "I understand it's very sophisticated calculations" one woman told me. Really? What a shame they didn't share their sophisticated calculations. Not even a brief explanation.

As the discussion continued some people asked me to provide proof of assertions I made. So I did. Just like anyone, I'll give my 'opinion' but if I say something as a statement of fact, I make damn sure I can back it up with proof.

This continued over a period of a few days. I happened to come across what does appear to be a genuinely independent site. Said site makes different recommendations for each region depending on the data they have collated. They include an explanation of their calculation methods, their analysis in each area, plus links to the source data. Seems much more robust to me. So I added a link to the site.

Of course the woman who had told me that the Lib dem fronted site had very 'sophisticated calculations' tried to rubbish it by saying if everyone did as they suggested then the Lib dems wouldn't get enough votes. Funnily enough - she's a Lib dem voter too. Who'd of thunk it?

The funny thing is, the Lib dem fronted site doesn't suggest voting Lib dem in Scotland or Wales. Just every region in England. Whereas the site I linked to does suggest they can make some gains in Scotland and Wales. Some people aren't exactly 'deep thinkers'. You know the type of person I mean? They seem vaguely intelligent and educated but get into conversation with them and it's all fur coat and no knickers! Strangely enough, here in the UK such types are often Lib dem voters. Just saying.........

Luckily for me, the more robust site suggests voting Green in my region so I can follow my head and my heart. Vote early and vote often! emoticon

Bright blessings

What a mess the voting was. Luckily, we had a postal vote, which was waiting for us as we arrived back from France.

I love that about you. Can't stand that prevarication when people try to convince others to take a stand or vote a specific way (or any position, really) and can't back it the hell up.

    You rock. Good luck!

You're made of sterner stuff than I... I can't get into discussion on those sorts of sites... I'm apt to get myself arrested. I hope the election leads to more solid footing for all.
