Physical Therapy

Thursday, May 23, 2019

Well, as I have already shared I had breast cancer last year. Part of the treatment was a surgery called a sentinel lobe biopsy. They look to see if the cancer has spread to your lymph nodes in your armpit, and this will determine whether or not you need radiation. I was very luck, mine was negative and I didn't need radiation. However, a problem that can occur, usually within the first year is a chronic "disease" called lymphedema. A few weeks ago a noticest a numbness in my armpit running down the top of my arm and my hand kept going numb. I was assessed by my surgeon who referred me to a lymphedema specialist. Yes, unfortunately I have this and because it is chronic that means it will never go away. The good news is because we caught it early I can do what I think is a lot of Physical Therapy that is supposed to help the lymph nodes drain and reduce the scar tissue. Today was my first day, and while the immediate exercises were not painful, now my armpit and hand are hurting quite a bit. My mood has been really good but I'm feeling a bit discouraged because I just want that to all be behind me. But it is what it is. At least there is a good treatment so I don't end up with elephantitis of my arm. Just thought I'd share. Sometimes just that makes me feel better. Cindy
