Eat more and weigh less

After hitting 50, I started to gain weight and could not lose it as easily as I once could. After a handful of false starts, I decided to get down to business and figure out what would work. That is when I came across spark people. It is a game changer! Tracking calories was much easier and held me accountable. I can now see patterns in my eating, good and bad, I am actually eating more than I used to and still losing weight. Quality and quantity of my food choices continue to improve. If you have not used the food tracker, just do it! After a slight learning curve, I'm rocking it! I have lost 17 pounds in 3 months and never get hungry! Food tastes better and I have more energy.

    I cannot stress enough the importance of drinking water! Sometimes the body feels hungry when it's actually just thirsty! I drink coffee in the morning, then switch to water. I do my best to drink atleast 3 to 6 glasses of water before I drink anything else.

    I measure what I eat. It's easy to under or over estimate. Another good trick is to buy smaller plates. I think mine are 10"? It's a psychological trick. You naturally eat less than if you have 12" plates. A study was done. I thought this was brilliant. Simple things add up. Any trick that works for you. :)

    Another thing that helps me is thinking ahead. If I have a good idea what my next couple of meals are, I don't get frustrated and hungry trying to figure it out. That makes me less likely to eat something not as healthy or higher in calories than I need. I am a giver and a care taker. I am learning to take the time to take care of me.

    Lunch is usually a serving of meat, one or two 1/2 cup servings of any vegetable and a fruit. Occasionally, I'll eat a salad with a can of tuna on top and a fruit on the side. If I'm exhausted and lazy, I'll eat a peanut butter on wheat with a side of fruit.
    Supper is always a meat, two or three vegetables, occasionally a fruit.
    I make sugar free strawberry jello with fruit cocktail in it when I want something sweet. I'm not much on sweets, thankfully. The longer you go without eating processed sugary sweets, the sweeter natural fruit tastes. I ate some raisins today, and I swear they tasted like candy!
    I have a special cup that I drink my water from...I usually drink 6 glasses a day. I try for 8, but I am addicted to Diet Pepsi. Lol Baby steps. I'm addicted to it. I'm going to quit it some day. :)

    My typical breakfast is a protein, usually egg. I will also eat a fruit and vegetable. Sometimes I add a slice of wheat bread toast or a flour tortilla to make an egg and veggie breakfast burrito.
    I love quiche! Find a spark recipe for one you like. I make one on Sunday and portion it out, wrap and freeze. That way, when I don't feel like cooking, I pop one serving in the microwave! I also make eggs with chopped veggies and spices in a muffin pan and freeze them too. I found a frittata recipe for this on spark recipes. You can also boil up some eggs and keep them in the fridge,
    My typical breakfast fruit is a cup of cantaloupe, strawberries, or watermelon. Sometimes I eat a large orange.
    The veggie varies. My favorites are 1/4 cup retried beans, 1/2 c steamed broccoli or Brussels sprouts, fresh spinach, salsa...or 1/2 cup whatever is leftover from supper, just for the ease of it. I eat a lot for breakfast!
    Since eating "clean" I have a new found love for baked sweet potatoes with supper, I buy big ones! Lol Sometimes I eat them plain, other times I mix and match a pat of butter, tsp of brown sugar, and cinnamon. Sweet potatoes are extremely filling.

    I had a similar experience years ago and found that as I increased the quality of the food I ate (more real food and high fiber food) I could actually eat more. Exercise also helped ramp up the weight loss. Now those two combined have helped me to keep the weigh off for more than 6 years.

    Can you share with me what you are eating? I'm eating healthy for the most part. But have only lost 8lbs in 3months. Appreciate your help. I need to loose some weight so I can get on an airplane for 27 hours in md August. ANY and ALL advice would be welcome!! Thank you for sharing your encouraging progress!!!
