Squirrel with a greyish back

Saturday, June 29, 2019

In my backyard I have a squirrel feeder, and a squirrel that comes to feed. I recognize him.

This summer, it looks to be the same squirrel, but the colour on his back isn't quite right, ... a little too grey. It's another squirrel, ... must have chased mine away. Yet the mannerisms, and his knowledge of how to open the feeder ... I had to train my old squirrel to open the lid. I filled it with peanuts, propped the lid open with one peanut for him the get the idea.

Then it hit me. I got grey in my 50's ... how old is my squirrel? I look it up, squirrels live about as long as dogs. You multiply how old a dog is by 7 to estimate "human" years. Well in the last year my squirrel aged about the same as a person would in 7 years. He's just older and greyer, like me. So he's probably about 60 in human years, ... I'll have him for about 3 more years, maybe he'll make it to 81 then?

Oh how cool! Thanks foe the smile this morning.

We had an old squirrel who had only one eye. Old One Eye hung around for years.....

Then a couple of frolicking squirrels we called Piss and Vinegar... they never moved in a straight line.... what a joy to watch.... couldn’t keep from laughing at them....they had so much fun.

Then when marijuana was legalized here in Oregon, out of staters bought up property and cut down so much of the forest.... buying sunshine to grow their weed. It wiped out so much of the wildlife habitat.... trees that provided shelter...and their playground... are gone.

Birds of prey have easy pickins.... other wildlife such as cougars, bear, foxes, have been fenced out of their natural territory and forced to roam wider areas including populated areas, roadways ..... people feel threatened by them.... they're easy pickins for poachers. Really sad.

So, we don't see many squirrels these days. I really miss that.
