Change Your Story

Hi Spark Family!
As I sit at my computer, I wanted to reflect on a comedy podcast I was listening to yesterday. On the podcast, the host shared his journey of healing and living in recovery from drugs and alcohol. He also shared how living in poverty as a child, living with an elderly father, and having very little to no support from positive adults negatively impacted his self-worth and fueled shame. His story touched me in a deep and meaningful way because he eloquently explained what my childhood experience was without going too much into psychobabble.
During the podcast, he also shared a quote that struck me to the core, which was "I wanted a different story growing up." When I listened to that, all I could think was this, "I wanted a different story growing up, so I HAVE the POWER to create one."
Although I did not have a unhealthy relationship with alcohol and/or drugs, I experienced a long problematic relationship with sweets and unhealthy food. Through the rich power of therapy, meditation classes, and establishing healthy boundaries with others, I am rewriting my story. Pretty soon, I will have a beautiful niece entering in this world, and I want to set an example of what self-love, self-kindness and commitment to lifelong learning looks like. I am that determined to do it!
