Baby Steps

I made it an entire week without eating out. This may not seem like much for some but for me it is a pretty big deal. With my busy life, I seem to find a way to justify eating out as a quick way to feed myself. I chose to conquer this battle for two reasons: 1) to save money and 2) to get healthy. No matter how healthy the choices we make seem. restaurants add so much salt and sugar to their food or use too many processed ingredients. My goal is to eat as clean as I possibly can.

So yesterday was my "eating out" day. It all started when I turned my alarm off and went back to sleep. I overslept 30 minutes and knew I was going to be a few minutes late for work. While driving, I suddenly found myself thinking about waffles. Knowing that I couldn't get a waffle, I chose to stop at the McDonald's on my route to work and get a McGriddle...close, right? It may have satisfied my craving but definitely wasn't worth the cost or the calories.

I went out with a co-worker at lunch and ordered a salad, chicken strips and baked potato. I ate all of the salad, half the baked potato, and two out of five chicken strips. I was proud of myself for not overeating to the point of misery as I normally would do. I ate one chicken strip before volleyball last night and the rest is going to be my lunch today.

About an hour after lunch, I had to make a sudden trip to the bathroom. I haven't had one of these attacks for a long time. Although I'm not sure which meal actually cause the attack, I'm guessing it was McDonald's. I had previously wrote them off because I had a suspicion of this. Now I know that I should never go back there again.

My plan is to go another week without eating out. I know that I can do it if I set my mind to it. Wish me luck!

    Not eating out is a tough one! I had to do Chinese take-out last night, felt badly about doing so, but only ate half. We'll never be perfect. We don't need to be. As you wrote, baby steps - taking it one day at a time. emoticon

    When I was working I ate in restaurants a lot. The convenience was the main reason.

    These days (we are both retired and quite reclusive) we rarely go to a restaurant. We both grocery shop, cook, and participate in the clean up so neither of us mind and there certainly advantages to having the time to do it.

    I wish you the best of luck on this journey! This was a challenge for me too because the food was convenient. Picking up the extra work of prepping was hard at first. Now when I do go out to eat I have fun researching new places with better options.

    I so agree about the baby steps. And yes, eating out is not really healthy, and the calories, I mean you can get a burger with way over a 1000 calories real easy, so it's best to make them at home and cut it at least in half.
