"I Treasure this Moment, for it Holds What is Best for Me"

Many years ago, I had a friend who used this statement as a mantra, and taught it to me, especially for repetition at difficult moments or during hard times. Asking why something is happening, or why it's happening to ME, is less productive than asking where in this experience is the good, the benefit, for me. Why am I the one who is addicted to sugar, what's good about that? Well, the experience of NOT eating sugar has particular power in my life. It gives me profound appreciation for other people's addictions; over time spent NOT eating sugar,I become hyper-aware of the rich deliciousness of real food--watermelon, strawberries, and my true favorite, white nectarines. Looking for that gift, what it is in this difficult situation that truly blesses me, has been a way of turning seeming misfortune into joy. So often, I come to realize that I really am the luckiest person in the world.
