Let's Hear it for Lemons!

I drink a lot. (that sounded bad....but I meant non-alcoholic beverages). But you know, sometimes water just doesn't do it for me. I have Sjogrens which is an autoimmune disease that gives you dry mouth, dry eyes, dry EVERYTHING. If I don't drink,my mouth is as dry as cardboard and it gets so bad that I cannot talk and even breathing is compromised, so I always have a drink within reach. But sometimes water itself seems dry...and it doesn't entice my salivary glands to produce saliva.
INDYGIRL, Beth Donovan gave me the suggestion of cutting two or three lemons up into pieces (including the peel) and soaking them in water overnight ..This suggestion is good for a cleanse and I don' t think you should do it every day. It works like diuretic so you will urinate a lot. It also helps with constipation so expect to need the bathroom frequently. I do not drink that lemon infused water straight up. I mix it with water ..I put maybe 8 oz of it into a large cup of about 1 ltr. size and fill the rest of the way with water. Then I replace the water I took from the lemon pitcher and put it back in the refrigerator. Repeat until the lemons are "worn out" then discard them. I do this once or twice a week.
But here is where it gets interesting
I was out of cold filtered water....so I tried substituting Diet Pepsi for the water....just for a change. And it was delicious! Years ago Coke and Pepsi came out with lemon flavored cola and it was not really very good. They did not use fresh lemon juice from real lemons. But this gives you the taste of the Pepsi jazzed up by the lemons.
I know there are those of you who will holler about the badness of drinking diet soda. I am siding with Spark People who hold the position that, if drinking a glass of diet soda will satisfy your craving for something sweet and will keep you from seeking out sugary snacks, then have the soda. And that is how I use it.. I drink water all day but when the water tastes dry---as it does to me after a lot of it---then I have the Pepsi as a change up. The occasional addition oft the lemon water is a nice change, and it is especially thirst quenching and it causes my saliva glands to wake up and keeps my mouth moist for a while.
Try it!! A note: I would not use the entire batch of lemon water to mix with the soda. Enjoy it with water and maybe once per batch, have it with soda. It tastes really good mixed with water also..
