A Little Disappointed

Friday, November 22, 2019

I have been laid off of my job for a company where I worked for 25 years. At first it felt liberating because I was really not being challenged in my position any more and needed a change. But, you know how it is when you've worked somewhere so long that you're making great money and you know you'll never make that salary anywhere else locally? You get comfortable. So, I was sticking it out until retirement (6 more years) when HR came and gave me that bad news. I was laid off as well as 25 other people.

So, I go to a clerical test today and FAILED. Yep. I failed a basic clerical test. I have been an Administrative Assistant for 30 years. I don't think it was due to lack of knowledge. The truth is I didn't realize the test had a time limit. Yeah, I took my sweet time making sure that my answers were correct, especially the math problems. After realizing the test was timed I had an out of body experience (LOL). With 3 minutes to spare, I rushed as quickly as I could through the next questions, but didn't get through enough of them to get a passing score of 50 correct. I had 44 correct, so if I could have made it through a few more I would have passed in spite of myself.

I drove home kicking myself and drowned my sorrows in 1 1/2 cups of Eggnog for a whopping four-hundred and something calories. At least I didn't have alcohol in it.

So, I am discovering that being laid off at 61 years old is no joke. I am also really proving to myself that food/drink is my drug of choice. I've got some work to do. I need to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I'm so sorry to hear about your job! Do you have the option to retake the test?

I have been through it 4 times. In May, 2018 after not having any money coming, I decided to retire and start receiving my SS. Well the following July, I found a great job, where I work from home, am considered part time working 6 hours a day and I love it. I know it is easy to say, don't sweat it something good will come along, but it will. It did for me and I was 65, no college degree, and I am having the time of my life on this job. Have faith.
