The Benefits of Walking

Monday, January 13, 2020

I have been commiserating with a fellow Sparker about our past histories of running and where that has left us now that we are older and possibly wiser. Up popped this excellent article on CBC this morning, enjoy and maybe look at walking in a whole new way.

We survived an ice storm yesterday (Ontario experienced it a day earlier) but today I have been busy clearing 2" of frozen ice and snow off steps and from my car. It took some time to get into my car to retrieve my scraper; note to self: keep a spare in the house!

I walk because I never had the wind to run, not even when I was a kid. Probably borderline asthmatic, but I don't think I was diagnosed as such. I enjoy walking.

    Thanks for the share.

I've never lived in an area that experiences ice storms; but, have siblings that have. And, have shared their experiences of chipping ice (for hours) from the wheel wells of their cars before being able to get off to work.

    You are a hardy one!

I was a runner in my twenties, for weight and mood control. Then my knee started to hurt, and so I stopped. And the knee pain went away. Walking is the best exercise, in my opinion. And you can walk fast. (I usually have to do so to keep up with my husband.)

Another plus is that I think you notice your surroundings more when you walk. When you run, you get mesmerized by the rhythm and flow of your running pace.

We didn't get too much ice here in S NB but a lot of ice pellets. Today seems fine (Tuesday).

Interesting article - thank you for posting the link. It mentions Nordic walking, which I tried a few years ago. I found that I walked more quickly so I covered more ground. Very effective in that way. But as soon as I was trying to undo the zip on my coat, or get something out of my pocket, I was whirling those sticks around and whacking the people next to me! Perhaps I'm just too clumsy for Nordic walking!
