Signs of . . . Spring?
Tuesday, January 21, 2020
Well, on January 21 in Canada, "spring" would be excessively optimistic, even for perennially optimistic me.
But: I am hearing much more activity from the crows. They stay all winter: but in the past few days they have been cawing loudly and flying around much more visibly, making their presence felt!! Typically I see them commence nest-building -- flying around with big sticks in their beaks -- towards the end of February.
And: I've seen more goldfinches in winter plumage at my bird feeders. They stay all winter too: males and females equally olive khaki coloured: but I haven't seen much of them until now. Gradually the males will return to their bright yellow . . . I can't actually persuade myself that there is any yellow visible just yet!!
And: last evening after work Henry and I began our walk in semi-daylight: the street lamps were not turned on. By the end of his walk, his light-up collar and leash were needed: but the days are definitely getting longer.
Yes, spring will return. And I will be watching and enjoying every spring indicator along the way!!
