Roadworks and pickles!

This monster appeared outside my window this morning - an underground vaccuum excavator?! Boy it was big! And noisy! They are digging a trench in the road outside, and this big machine was hoovering up the dust and rubble. What with that and the pneumatic drills and the digger - it was Very Noisy!



So, this morning, instead of my friend coming to my house, I went to hers!

On my way home at lunch-time I picked up two different pickled things - not quite 'fermented foods' but half-way there. I like the dill pickles, and the red cabbage is marinated in apple juice and vinegar and is actually a nice, gently pickled flavour. This is part of my quest to try to include more fermented/pickled foods in my diet. I had some of each with my lunch - which was delicious: two portabello mushrooms, with a veggie burger, onions, lettuce and vegan cheese in between. It was scrumptious!



I didn't get my 10,00 steps today, or go for a bike ride - it was too cold for me! But Garmin still awarded me a Chinese New Year badge for a 20 min 'walk' today (to my friend's house).



So pretty - I love these virtual badges.

    It's good that you could go to your friends and get away from the noise for awhile.

    How wonderful that they vacuum up the mess as they go. Noisy but very efficient compared to here.
    I make a hot red cabbage "relish"; shredded cabbage, some thinly sliced onion and fresh garlic, a touch of oil to coat the veggies. Heat that up, stirring constantly so that veggies get coated with the oil and then add a pinch of sugar, some apple cider or white vinegar (and some water if you prefer less tangy), pop the lid on the pot and simmer on low heat until veggies are soft. It is wonderful served hot but I make extra so that I can have it cold as well. Some recipes also call for caraway seeds and others include raisins in the mix.

    When there were four buildings going in behind us, I did a lot of shopping just to get away from the noise. Being beside a residential area, they were not to begin until 8. Once it was 6:40. The police got a lot of calls. I told the chief if someone ever found peanut butter on an earth mover seat, I was the perpetrator. emoticon

    I have those pickles in my fridge!

    I like making a green sauce by blending a couple with coriander, lime juice and a spot of mustard. We have it on Minnestrone soup.
