Dare I say I was a friendly, popular addition to the midnight to AM shift at the hospital? When I had a break or needed coffee and someone to keep me awake I'd travel to Labor and Delivery where there always was a fresh pot brewing and various staff chatting. My close friends included some doctors, nurses, nurse anesthetists and even the hospital chaplain. My pregnancy was the source of comment from many.
When the day came, I was alternately wanting to go home and wanting to get things over, my friends were there. Some slight emergency prompted my doctor to send me to xray, all was deemed well. As I was still enjoying those last stage contractions my boss saw me being wheeled to the elevator and tried to engage me in conversation! I politely told him I was busy!
By the time "we" were ready, word had gotten around and I noticed a few extra scrub-suited people milling about the desk. My nurse asked if the student nurse could attend. Sure. Several of my night shift friends stayed over from midnights. Mind if we come in? Whatever. One of my doctor friends patted me on the head and said he'd like to see my beautiful baby. Bets were still being made as to sex...back before you'd know in advance.
There were 10 people in the delivery room besides DH and my doctor. I coulda cared less!
Today this little girl is going to torture her mom again in a Pilates Reformer session!
