Meet Powder, the Steamboat Ski area's mascot and more officially, its safety dog:
Duncan Draper is Powder’s owner. He has been a ski patroller in Steamboat for the last 17 years. Powder took on the mascot and safety job two years ago as a puppy:
Realistically, Powder's job early on was to be irresistibly cute, a job she handled easily:
Now Powder and Draper roam the mountain a few days each week during ski season to spread safety messages in an attempt to prevent accidents at the resort. People are attracted to Powder, and as crowds gather to give her a few scratches, Draper outlines some of the resort’s mountain safety codes.
Draper hopes that teaching people how to be responsible guests at a ski resort will mean a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Many first-time skiers and riders don’t stick with the sport because of preventable accidents.
This year, the resort started selling Powder-inspired stuffed animals. Part of the proceeds go to the Routt County Search and Rescue, a volunteer-based service that saves people lost or trapped in the backcountry.
Since the ski season ended unexpectedly quickly a month early, Powder is getting the chance to relax with Duncan and rest up for NEXT season (when I'm sure she will still be a hit with the crowds!)
