NZ Essential Workers

Wednesday, April 08, 2020

This year my cherry tree has been particularly beautiful. It is over 20 years old. For a few years it started to look like it was declining. Last year we had a tree doctor come and give it some treatment. It was so worth it.
Yesterday I really did not feel like getting outside for my Walking laps around the yard. I had to talk myself into doing it. After I finished my laps I sat in my chair in the backyard and enjoyed the quiet. As I sat there, I noticed some little birds flitting around. I tried to get a photo, but they are so small it is hard to see them.

Sitting there is a wonderful way to calm down and recharge.

WHen I began to write this blog I had a very different topic in mind. Instead I want to leave you with this.
I have not been listening to the news. It is one of the ways I keep myself calm. My husband told me about the Prime Minister of New Zealand speaking and played a portion of it for me.
New Zealand shut down early and completely, wanting, instead of stemming the spread of the virus, to eliminating it. As a result they have had one death and very few cases.
In her talk, she said, "The Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy are essential workers. But they may need to be home at this time to protect themselves and their families. SO if they do not visit your house, understand why. But instead why not draw a picture of the Easter Bunny and put it or a stuffed bunny in your window so we can all celebrate together?" (Not a direct quote but the essence of her words).
Here she is head of a country, making hard decisions to keep people safe. Yet she is caring enough to reach out to the children, who are confused and upset, to offer them some comfort.
I agree, the Easter bunny and tooth fairy are essential workers.
Find ways to brighten your day today.
Stay safe and healthy.

Your tree is beautiful. It's one of my favorite trees. I read about what the Prime Minister of New Zealand wrote. I think that is very sweet. Towns are also doing bear hunts. My grand nephews have put Teddy Bears in the windows. People either drive through neighborhoods or walk through and look for Teddy Bears in the window.

In our area, they are having a virtual Easter egg hunt for the kids. Everybody was asked to decorate and put a large Easter egg in their window. The parents drive their children around the neighborhood and the children delight in finding as many eggs as they can in the windows.

Yes, if it's confusing and upsetting to US as adults, imagine how much more so it is for a child.

And there are those kids who have had to be in the care of someone other than their parent(s) if they are an essential worker like a nurse, Dr., pharmacist, etc. Lots for them to process!

Whatever we can do to make it easier for them, that's what to do!

And as suggested, there ARE ways to celebrate together, even if we're not together!

wow that brought me to tears. Yes the children are probably more upset at what is going on especially the very young who really dont understand. And your tree is amazing - what beauty. And serenity sitting enjoying the quiet and the birds. I heard that the earth is actually being able to heal itself a bit with everyone staying inside. Less pollution, less noise and more time for mother nature to get better.

    Stay safe
