My "Return" to SparkPeople...

Time to come back to what I know works for me... that is SparkPeople and the support & accountability that the amazing members provide!

I originally joined SparkPeople in 2008, when at the age of 38, I finally got tired of spending my entire adult life, as well as most of my teen years, fighting an unending “battle of the bulge”. I was always the "large girl" in high school, living in the size 16-18 range. My senior year, determined to not be a "fat senior", unfortunately I dabbled w/ bulimia, getting myself down to a size 12-14 for the first time in my teen life. Luckily for me, I had a BFF that recognized what was happening, and she recruited my boyfriend to help me overcome that before it got too strong of a hold on me!

Shortly after I got married just a year after graduating, I became pregnant & discovered at my first dr. appt. that I was already over 200 lbs. From there my weight just continued to increase.
Over the years I would attempt any & all new fad diet that came around, or the latest diet pill on the market, some being just a waste of money, while others had a some success... but no matter what I may have lost, I always regained it back shortly after going back to "normal" (& usually those returning pounds brought along some extra friends w/ them).

In 2007, I found myself at my then highest weight of 277, and decided I had to finally do something serious about losing weight. I decided to try out Nutrisystem & lost almost 40 lbs just w/ diet alone. I knew I didn't want to stay on a "purchased" meal plan the rest of my life, so I started looking into how I could transition back to "regular food" w/out undoing all the good I had done like every time before, and that is when I discovered SparkPeople. I joined on 12/14/2008, and over the next couple of years, I was very successful, getting down to just 10 lbs. from my goal of losing 100 lbs. total. During that time, I slowly added in more & more exercise, and eventually began to love working out. As I got closer to my goal, I decided to start a Couch-to-5K program and ended up participating in numerous 5K & 10K races.

It was while training for a half-marathon at the end of 2010 that I discovered that I had actually injured my right hip d/t the running (& a predisposition to osteoporosis). This injury ended up w/ me having a partial hip replacement & that was the end of my running career. In fact, for a couple years, it kinda put a kabosh on much working out at all as I had a difficult time figuring out what would & would not work for me in regards to exercise. I slowly watched my weight creep back up to 262 by the end of 2013, and that is when I knew I had to do something about it. I consulted a personal trainer to help me design a program that would for my hip, and was able to get my weight back down to 236 by the end of 2014, but then saw it go back up the next year d/t some personal issues & depression.

Early in 2015, I had a fall, that unbeknownst to me, caused some issues w/ the hardware in my
hip, and by the end of the year, my partial hip replacement had to be converted to a total hip replacement. (the real irony of all of this is the fact that I am an orthopedic nurse on a joint replacement unit... you would think I would know how to prevent these issues) Anyway, that really put a kabosh in my workout routine, and I have never really gotten back to any type of consistent exercise program. Though, I have continued to pay my monthly gym fees... I guess it made me feel a little bit better about myself if I knew the option was there?!?!?

So fast forward to the fall of 2018... and I found myself at age 49 weighing in at a new all-time high of 287 lbs! You would think that would be the wake-up call I needed, and at the time I thought it was... and yet in August 2019, I turned the big 5-0, and still weighed in at 280 lbs. To say that I was disgusted w/ myself would be an understatement... my son was getting married on a cruise ship in just 6 months & I had promised myself that I would not be the "fat mom" in all of the pictures. What made this time different is beyond me, but I was absolutely bound & determined to finally get healthy.

I was able to lose about 30 lbs over those 6 months, which wasn’t as much as I wanted to lose, but definitely was the most successful I had been for many, many years! After we returned home from the wedding cruise, I picked up where I had left off, though I switched it up a little this time and decided to try out a Keto eating plan. I have always been a sugar & carb-aholic, so I thought this might be a good fit to help me get my cravings under control. I have managed to get another 20 lbs off in the past 2 months, so now it’s time to add in the fitness aspects & get my body back into shape!

I had a friend from SP reach out to me re: joining a challenge that I used to participate in religiously on here (thanks JENNIFERRR1973), and it just seemed like the perfect time to return to what I know works for me! I am back because I know SparkPeople provides me the support, encouragement & accountability that I need as I go forward... it has worked for me in the past, and I know it will be an integral part of any success I have from here forward. I'm back to finish what I started some 13 years ago!


Here is a brief “recap” of my weight “roller coaster” story:

9/2007: 277 lb. (previous highest wt)
12/2008: 234 lb. (first SparkPeople wt)
12/2009: 211 lb.
9/2010: 187 lb. (lowest wt so far)
12/2011: 228 lb. (first hip surgery)
12/2012: 262 lb.
12/2013: 236 lb.
12/2014: 265 lb.
12/2015: 254 lb. (second hip surgery)
8/2016: 270 lb.
8/2017: 282 lb.
9/2018: 287 lb. (all-time highest wt)
8/2019: 280 lb. (50th birthday wt)
12/2019: 252 lb.
4/2020: 231 lb. (halfway to goal wt – 175lb)

As I weighed in yesterday, I also realized that I hit the halfway mark from my highest weight of 287 to my goal of 175... 56 lbs gone! I've done the first half on my own... now I look to all of you to help me shed the second half & finally reach my "finish line"!!!

    Your determination will bring you the success that will will put you the best health ever! I understand how difficult it is to exercise when the body is damaged. I am in between surgeries, so my focus is keeping track of the food even when what I consume is not on plan. That seems to keep me in calorie range. Then the exercise will fall in line when I have less weight to haul around. Spark People is awesome. I have some "good" friends on here and their encouragment is so inspiring and helpful.

    So glad you are back, It has been a rollercoaster ride for sure but now you know what it takes to reach your goals. 56 lbs. i an awesome achievement. You should be so proud.

    As a fellow hip-pain sufferer I wish you the best. I have such a limited range of movement, especially in my right hip. I am always on the lookout for exercises that will increase mobility and lessen pain.

    Here is to more good days than bad days.
